Mailove - The fast KDE mail client

I have had many email clients over the years. I have been using Thunderbird for years, but it gets laggy over time with delays in second, being very slow. It has also other issues like reindexing emails from the oldest years back (while displaying nothing) and you wait minutes to see the latest email received…

So I decided to develop my own. And since I use KDE, my choice was clear.

Thus I present Mailo - a new email client with focus on speed, usability and security.

Seems a bit misleading to call it “The fast KDE mail client” when it’s not a KDE project.

See Adding a new KDE project | Developer for the process to actually make it a KDE project.

I see. Thank you for notifying me of this.

It’s mostly a hobby project at this point, but building on top of wonderful KDE tech stack.

I don’t think it’s ready to be included in any official KDE projects yet.

I called it KDE-only email client at first, so I might switch to that again.

Mailo is the brand name of a French company whose main purpose is to provide an email service.

So calling your client “Mailo” is a surefire way to get yourself into trouble with their lawyers.

My humble hobby project can coexist without issues.

Interesting project. I see that you have a create_appimage.sh in the repo. Any plan to create app images and/or a flatpak for potential users?

Already there (open assets, if you don’t see it):

What does “KDE-only” mean?

If it’s just for your own consumption, sure - if you’re promoting it to others (as you’re doing here), I personally think it would make sense to go ahead and avoid confusion for your users, and avoid bumping up against the registered trademark that Mailo has established.

It looks like the trademark is all caps = MAILO.

But it’s an interesting point to think about, so I might change it later.

Please, also send me some brief notes on how AppImage works on your system (and what your OS / distro is). I am not sure it is truly cross-platform.

v2 released with full JMAP support added

With an up-to-date arch linux:

Warning: its never a good idea to download+run untrusted binaries as your main user but better use another user account which has no/limited access to sensitive stuff. Or just use flatpak’s rather then appimage’s which run proper sandboxed.

cd ~/Download
wget https://github.com/nekromoff/mailo/releases/download/2.0/Mailo-x86_64.AppImage
chmod 755 Mailo-x86_64.AppImage
./Mailo-x86_64.AppImage

and it looks like that with oxygen:

fyi: Request to become the maintainer of Trojitá and PIM / Trojitá · GitLab

So maybe a strong competition when it comes to fast handling of imap accounts with many folders/mails.

I have seen this email client, but it looked abandoned. I am glad it has a new maintainer. It looks a bit outdated to me, but maybe they can bring it up to date.

Renamed to Mailove:

Only some obscure domain that seems to be inactive exists with this name.
