i believe this is self-explanatory, if you have a 5 second .gif then you should be able to extend it for a long as you want it to.

I strongly second this suggestion, and if possible I’d like to extend it to pretty much any clip, including non-animated image formats, Image Sequence and even audio (very useful if you want to add some ambiance SFX).
Maybe by default at the moment of dragging from the project bin to the timeline it would be its normal length, but then you’d be free to extend it to any length like a loop. Maybe adding an option to each clip to enable/disable this endless loop, and to avoid compatibility issues with older projects that option would be disabled by default.
