Many issues (Hotspot, File Transfer, GPU/Mouse wake, Printer adding on Network)

I like KDE customization but Gnome just works… I can’t get a hotspot on, file transfer to usb sometimes gets stuck on dolphin, adding a network printer through autodiscovery doesn’t work automatically, sleep used to turn off my trackpad and 1/2 my discrete GPU, I had to search using tab then on an update the highlight for tab didn’t work on checkboxes and restart to get full GPU back. The UI needs improvement too.

Hi @STEVE_NGINYO welcome to the KDE forum.

You’ve posted in Help, but your post seems more like a statement than a request.

If you’re after help, which of these issues would you consider the most critical to resolve first?

  1. I can’t get a hotspot on
  2. file transfer to usb sometimes gets stuck on dolphin
  3. adding a network printer through autodiscovery doesn’t work automatically
  4. sleep used to turn off my trackpad and 1/2 my discrete GPU
  5. I had to search using tab then on an update the highlight for tab didn’t work on checkboxes and restart to get full GPU back
  6. The UI needs improvement too.

And to get a head start, can you provide some more hardware/environment details? I suggest the output of inxi -zv8 as it is comprehensive and the -z flag redacts any sensitive information.

Sincerely speaking all these are too critical, except for, the printing because not everyone is printing… Otherwise… each one is too critical to ignore either one… Problem is they’re things that normally should be functional

You don’t want to close your editing software because your session got laggy

You have a wired connection, you need to create a hotspot for your phone

You need to carry something on a usb, you shouldn’t wait 30 mins for the last 1% to be added because it’s not transferring at 16kbps and spiking up and down

You close your laptop lid you wanna open it and continue working… but now your track pad isn’t working and the restart doesn’t help. For a regular user that’s unusable.

So… call me crazy, but this feels less like issues I’ve seen with KDE in particular and more with a different distribution on potentially not well supported hardware. What distribution are you using KDE with? And perhaps, more critically, what is the hardware in question?

I’ve encountered laggy sessions on both GNOME and KDE on my laptop (it is an old device though), laggy session may be more due to a hybrid graphics issue, not entirely sure about the wired connection issue? Somewhat confused there, are you saying that the wifi isn’t working on your computer? As far as the USB issue, again, I feel like that’s an issue with some sort of Linux kernel thing, and I’ve never had the issue with the trackpad on any laptop I’ve installed KDE on.

Not to discredit your experience, of course, but we’d like to know the root of the problems in order to get them fixed, and make everyone’s experience better in the end.

Kde on Nobara

1650 mobile gpu

Ryzen 5 CPU

There’s also this annoying thing that I forgot to mention. I can unplug my HDMI and the audio remains on that disconnected device so I have to go then turn it off manually

My hardware can’t be the problem because Gnome functions as expected. Could it be not targeted by KDE, probably but most hardware calls kind of work globally, then drivers do their thing.

Well,

In my experience, Nvidia cards tend to be a big headache (tbf it’s been years since I had a Nvidia card, so maybe it got better since), and that is a case where the two different desktop environments can encounter differences, so that likely explains, at least some issues regarding a laggy desktop.

Did you previously use Nobara with GNOME? Or a different distro? Is it a fresh install, or did you just add the environment in addition to it?

Also, side thought, I can’t recall if Wayland is not well supported on Nvidia cards, and I know Nobara makes a point about no X11 support… maybe that’s causing an issue with KDE? Not too sure, maybe a dev can help with that.

True for older cards, but shouldn’t be a problem on the 1600 series here.

It sounds like the problem is more about switching between the iGPU and dGPU.

The install came with KDE

It gave me problems so I looked and I could install Gnome

So I installed Gnome… If Gnome gave me problems then I’d agree it’s an install or wayland issue… But I had installed KDE specifically… Added Gnome, deleted KDE, now I’m trying to go back and give KDE a 2nd chance and my workflow would be broken. And it shouldn’t be. I can play maybe e football just fine on both environments so it’s not the driver

Gnome pauses audio and video. Then you can play… and the swap has happened

I have to activate the nvidia audio profile sometimes. And the audio will automatically swap but once off it doesn’t swap back.

the video is good tho. audio is not… it’s a weird state. can extend can turn off display. video is ok
