Menu missing (Kubuntu 25.04)

For kdenlive 25.04.1-x86_64 running from the appimage on Kubuntu 25.04 (upgraded from Kubuntu 24.10), the menubar is missing and cannot be restored by the usual means. This is not an issue in kdenlive 24.12.3, also running from the appimage on the same Kubuntu 25.04. The application seems to run fine except for the missing menu.

I haven’t been able to find anyone else commenting on this.

Am I missing something?

There was a report about the colour picker not working on that distro release under wayland. So if this is part of the same theme, it looks like “try X11, or maybe another distro” is going to be the FAQ answer for that distro release in the near term.

Thank you for your response, Ron.

FWIW, I found 2 workarounds.

F10 brought up the menus in a window.

From there, toggle on the Main Toolbar (Settings > Toolbars Shown > Main Toolbar). That puts the menus in a hamburger menu at the upper left. I probably turned off the toolbars (if they were ever on) to save space.

Not absolutely ideal, but workable. And I might get used to it.

If you were starting from a clean slate, the menu bar and toolbars should be shown by default.

The menu bar is a bit Special and gets handled in some OS specific way (on Mac it doesn’t appear at the top of the window, they do menus differently). Maybe wayland or something distro specific is trying to do that to you (it works As Expected for me in bleeding edge X11 plasma on Debian Trixie).

I personally prefer the hamburger and turn the menubar off to maximise vertical space. The very few things from it that you want faster access to than via the hamburger you can add directly to the toolbar (and/or a keyboard shortcut if it doesn’t already have one) - since unlike the menu bar, the toolbars can easily be customised.

OK. For what it’s worth, I got the menu back here (and in GIMP, which also had a disappearing menu), by disabling the “Application menus daemon” from KDE’s Background Services (which i got to from krunner). This make some other menus misbehave, but I can live with that. The Background Services says to submit a bug report if I’m disabling something to work around an issue, so I’m about to try to submit a bug report to someone more appropriate.

Thank you for your help.

I wonder if you are supposed to have some sort of applet running to show the menus outside of the app window for that?

If they push back about something we’re doing, feel free to bring it back here - this isn’t a corner of the code I’ve spent much time in, but it looks like we’re just using plain vanilla QMenuBar, not KDE’s KMenuBar wrapper for it …

but so far you also seem to be the only one reporting this to us (though the internet appears to be full of OMG where did my menu go for other apps), so it would be interesting to know if there’s something more to your local config that’s making this combination unhappy.
