Monitors black after Plasma 6 splash

Background:

Login with SDDM into a Wayland session >>> Splash screen animation loads.

Once it’s time for the desktop to load, my external monitors go dark and behave as if disconnected.

If I press the Esc key, the desktop will display on the external monitors.

If I open the laptop lid, the laptop and external monitors will show the desktop.

This issue only affects 1 user. A newly created user does not have this problem.

journalctl output for both users match with the exception of the following entries showing up for the problem user.

journalctl -b | grep -i wayland

archlinux kwin_wayland[651]: kwin_wayland_drm: Failed to create framebuffer: Invalid argument

archlinux ksplashqml[654]: qt.qpa.wayland: eglSwapBuffers failed with 0x300d, surface: 0x0

Hi!

Am I reading that correctly that you:

  • Log in using SDDM with the laptop lid closed
  • After the splash screen displays on one of your external displays, they both then stop displaying anything
  • They begin showing the desktop again after you either 1) press Esc or 2) open the laptop lid?

Did the problem always exist with that user, or did the issue begin at a certain point after the user was created / you set up your hardware? Did anything noticeable change about software on your device - like big Plasma or kernel updates occurring - around the time the issue began?

This has been occuring for many months, but was not occuring for the current problem user after a fresh install.

I’m not sure how to troubleshoot further and would love some ideas. I have exhausted ChatGPTs capabilities as well.

I’d have to defer to folks who use multiple monitors for direct ideas - just one other random thought, though, does the issue show up if only one external monitor is connected? (Perhaps somehow something is pending between the two displays that gets “unstuck” when you press Esc?)

The problem doesn’t happen under a freshly created user and all of the “resets” i’ve tried for KDE have been unsuccessful. I would love some tips on how to troubleshoot or log what’s happening.
