Motion Tracker Frame rotation and/or shape

I’m using kdenlive to edit videos for my motorcycle chanel on youtube, and due to this i have some specific question related to the motion tracker.
I need to blur out the license plates for regulatory reasons, since it is considered private information here…
But with lean angle the license plates shape shifts from a rectangle, and until now i solved this by making the tracked area bigger to cover it.
To solve this issue it would be nice to have other shapes for tracking.
Or if the tracking would also tilt if the tracked object tilts in the video.
Until now i did not find any solution to this anywhere.
Is there a way to somehow add other (custom or predefined?) shapes to the tracker? Or is there a tracking algorithm which would also follow the tilt of the object?

I know, that with rotoscoping i could make accurate shapes, but that takes a huge amount of time in a normal traffic flow (specially with lane splitting, which is legal here), and it would be great to do it with the simplicity of the Motion Tracker.

Any suggestions or ideas are welcome. Thank you!

Hi, and welcome to the forum and community.

You could combine the motion tracker with the Rotoscope effect. At least for the position. Simply copy the keyframes created by the MT to the Rotoscope effect. You then have to adjust only the shape but a few keyframes should take care of that.

If that’s still too much work you may want to wait for the upcoming 25.04 release that is bringing background removal based on the SAM2 model from meta. With that tool you can select the license plate and have Kdenlive create a mask for it. Then invert the mask and use it for blurring.

Thank you for the reply, i will try the Rotoscope + motion tracker until 25.04 arrives. Or stick with the current motion tracking and somewhat bigger blurring until the release.
