Fresh install of Debian 13 on a laptop (with the KDE Plasma 6.3 DE): I was getting the “unable to load packages / please verify internet connection” error in Discover, so I did some research and found that it’s a known issue. The solution I found said to uninstall, and then reinstall the appimage package, of which Discover has a dependency. So I uninstalled it, but cannot reinstall it. And now I see that Discover is completely gone from my system. Looks like I screwed up. Help please?
Package dependency issues are probably better addressed at the distribution level.
Theoretically something like
sudo apt install plasma-discover
should work
Hi Krake. Thanks so much for the quick response. Unfortunately that didn’t work for me. Please see attached screen shot. ![]()
Hmm, I was guessing the package name based on how it is called on KDE Neon.
A quick package search says it also has that same name on Debian Trixie.
No idea why your systems doesn’t agree. This really sounds like something to discuss on a Debian support channel
I actually tried that first. I posted it in Debian User Forums, but the response I got was cryptic and he was asking me to present him with more info, in a way I was completely unfamiliar with. I seemed to be going in circles. So I figured I’d try here (thinking maybe it was a KDE specific topic).
Anyway, it was an excuse to join this discussion board, so I’m sure I will learn lots while I’m here. I’m brand new to Plasma. I’ve used Cinnamon for years.
Thanks again for replying!
I wonder if you have somehow remove the package source for Debian.
Your /etc/apt/sources.list should look similar to this (educated guess, googling “debian 13 package plasma-discover has no installation candidate”)
deb https://deb.debian.org/debian/ trixie main contrib non-free non-free-firmware
deb https://security.debian.org/debian-security trixie-security main contrib non-free non-free-firmware
deb https://deb.debian.org/debian trixie-updates main contrib non-free non-free-firmware
I may have. Like I said the solution I found was to uninstall and then re-install the appimage package. I uninstalled it, but then could not for the life of me get it to reinstall! Frustrating. That’s when I discovered the whole Discover app was missing.
I’ve been a Linux user for years, but am still only an “intermediate.” There are lots of things I don’t know and don’t understand. And ‘m brand new to KDE Plasma (and Discover).
I do have another Debian laptop with KDE installed that I use infrequently. I suppose I could go see how Discover acts on that one. But as far as “fixing it” on this new (better) laptop, I may be in over my head. ![]()
this is what a debian 13 (kde) /etc/apt/sources.list file looks like on distrosea.com
if yours looks different, then that might have something to do with your issues.
FYI, an appimage is not really “installed” and definitely nothing to do with apt or discover.
you simply download it from the developers website, move it to a folder on your path, ~/bin or ~/.local/bin, and then change the permission to make it executable…. from there you just double click on it.
if you want to make launch able from the app menu like all your other apps, you will need to edit your app menu and add a .desktop file for the app, placing the path to the executable in the “program” field.
Do you have files in /etc/apt/sources.list.d?
Does any of them point to the deb.debian.org servers?
Then you definitely need at least the content of @skyfishgoo in your main sources.list file, maybe even the lines I had found.
Currently you have no sources for Debian packages, so the system can’t install or update anything
what does kinfo say?
and did you actually install debian on a disk or is this just running off a thumb drive?
Yes, I did install it to disk. It’s a brand new 240GB internal SSD (NVMe) that I ordered from B&H Photo for that purpose.
And I got the image from the Debian website
It was the “Live KDE” image. I put it on a thumb drive with Balena Etcher and then ran the local install from the desktop.
Krake and Skyfish: Hey guys, an update on the situation… I’m home and have re-imaged. This time instead of using the specific KDE install (from the Debian.org web page) I went with their standard net install .ISO, and borrowed an ethernet USB adapter from work (as this laptop does not have an ethernet port). The install just finished, and it went fine. I downloaded both KDE Plasma, and my old favorite Cinnamon (as something to fall back on should Plasma get messed up again). Discover populates and seems to work fine. So I’m right back where I started from about 72 hours ago. ![]()
I’m heading out right now to spend the evening with some friends, but wanted to let you both know right away that it’s up and running again. I’m excited, and very pleased. Thank you for all the correspondence with me during the day today. My first impression of this user forum has been a very good one. Have a great night.
