NASA APOD wallpaper stopped working

As of today, the APOD wallpaper is no longer fetched. It results in an SSL error.

In fact, this was announced months in advance: The NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) site has a new URL: https://science.nasa.gov/apod .

Unfortunately, the whole document structure has changed, and especially the composition of the picture’s URL. It is no longer created with a fixed pattern but fetched from Wordpress assets, as it seems.

This means, that we cannot simply exchange the URL in apodprovider.cpp; there needs to be a new code to search for the images’ URL in the HTML document.

I narrowed the position of the image URL down to the element

<figure class="hds-media-inner hds-cover-wrapper hds-media-ratio-fit "><a href="https://science.nasa.gov/image-article/apod-2026-september-30-arp-78-peculiar-galaxy-in-aries/"><img width="1772" height="1182" src="https://assets.science.nasa.gov/dynamicimage/assets/science/cds/apod/apod/2026/october/NGC772_Robert_Eder.jpg?w=1772&amp;h=1182&amp;fit=clip&amp;crop=faces%2Cfocalpoint"

which contains the <img> element with the URL of today’s image.

IMO this could still be extracted with RegExes, as it is coded right now, though a different code that works on the DOM would probably be more reliable.

Is anyone working on this already?

yeah nasa moved apod to science.nasa.gov and broke the old url pattern. already filed:

til that lands u can just swap Picture of the Day over to Bing or Wikimedia in wallpaper settings so ur not staring at a blank/ssl fail.

api.nasa.gov/planetary/apod still serves a clean hdurl if someone rewrites the provider off html scraping.

Thanks, I directly commented on Bug 526447.

The other bug (518709) is from April, before the major change, so it’s probably obsolete.
