No connect with android hotspot or USB-Thether

hello community,

my normal connection to internet is via the USB-Thetering to my phone.
but exactly this does not allow me to use kdeconnect.

i just tried to ping the phone - that is working.when it try
curl 10.117.247.116:1716 (as suggested in this post) it just hangs. (maybe runs in an timeout after more than a minute - that is how long i waited)

so it seems the hotspot and thetering modes on my Fairphone is not allowing the udp 1716 port packets.?!

does anybody know if its easy possible to allow it?

The example command tries to access kdeconnect’s TCP port.
I was never successful in pinging a phone with a curl command. I think it is also important to note that kdeconnect doesn’t actually do HTTP - I just use curl as a simple TCP connection checker.
I suggest trying the kdeconnect-cli command - you can find some examples of using the CLI to ping the phone - here.

in the section Send output of any command to your phone
the commands basically use

$ kdeconnect-cli -a --id-only
0 devices found

to get a device.

but hat fails - as no device is available:

$ kdeconnect-cli --list-available
0 devices found

i have not found any setting in the phone to change the hotspot / thethering in any way..

I also have a FP4 and managed to replicate your issue in tethered mode. I don’t think its Fairphone specific though.

What worked for me was to open KDE Connect settings on the laptop (from the status bar applet) and hit the Refresh button while tethered. That picked up the connection between devices. The reverse (pull down refresh on the phone) does not do nothing.

Minor details but maybe relevant: had the KDE connect app open on my phone and the device selected in view. It doesn’t show up as selectable in this wierd state, but I’ve went to pair new and selected the already remebered one from there.

If that works for you to, I’d suggest to make a better/more detailed report. Start the phone fresh, tether, refresh and dump the logs from the mobile app (somewhere within settings).

What looks sketchy to me at a glimpse in the log is that devices are discovered but without an address

the open settings via statusbar and hit refreshdid indeed connect on the first click!
that is very confusing - in the long past i did sometimes had luck with using the

kdeconnect-cli --refresh

and

kdeconnect-cli --list-devices

commands - but that did not fix it in the last weeks…

i will try to do the fresh-start log thing

in my log i did not find any MdnsDiscovery:

i restarted my phone,
connected usb
connection worked.
opened the kdeconnect settings via statusbar on my laptop
clicked refresh
phone directly connected

And I’ve just learned today about the cli!

So there’s probably two bugs hidding in plain sight because there is no obvious reason for the cli refresh to behave differently than the UI.

Your second log looks very useful, I would report a bug with the log on the projects Gitlab issues page (don’t know where the repositiry for the android app is) to get a permanent fix for the issue.

i have to correct:
CLI refresh does the same.
in the past it did not work for me..

just tested at this moment.
and the kdeconnect-cli --refresh is working the same as the button.

so only one bug left

i will create a issue - and will need some time to do it nicely..
