open a folder in a new window instead of a new tab

In Dolphin is there a way to open a folder in a new window by a left double click? I have tried to change settings in Dolphin but it just keeps opening a folder in one window and not opening a folder in a 2nd window. I know I can right click a folder and choose “Open in A New Window”, but I was thinking more like double clicking the folder to open it in a new window. Maybe some alteration to a config? file?
I really dislike the tabs . I find it awkward when moving files.

You can press F3 and you’ll have 2 independent folders in each side (only requires 2 tabs to work) and you can forget the tabs and work as if you had 2 windows.

Try and tell us if you like it (is as you have the old midnight commander).

Thank you Krovikan for replying. I did try your F 3 suggestion and it does open a 2nd [side] window in the window I am currently in, which is the same folder. I then have to open the folder that i would like to transfer to. Also, I am used to having multiple windows open, that I switch back and forth from, so I would like to be able to simply be able to click or double click on a folder to open it. Other than everyone seems to be moving toward the TAB experience [browsers, file managers] I am not sure why Dolphin has changed this. It used to be [not so very long ago] that one could do either way in Dolphin. Unfortunately, the TAB experience does not work for me. Would you know if I could run an older version of Dolphin and put it on the “Do Not Disturb” list?

Maybe you need to downgrade all KDE system or at least Gear (but Gear depends of KDE and vice versa).

hi, welcome.

if you uncheck this setting it should open in a new window

In Dolphin 25.12.1 is:

Thank you skyfishgoo. I don’t seem to have the same config window that you do. My config window does not have a ‘Start Up’ tab on the left, although in interface under Folders & Tabs it does have an area where I can uncheck “Keep a single Dolphin window, opening new folders in tabs”. I have unchecked this but for some reason it does not change anything.

Also, in view under ‘General’ there is a place that I have unchecked that says “Background: Double click triggers” > [dropdown box] There are several choices, one of which is ‘New Window’. I have checked this box, but still nothing happens.

Thank you Krovikan. Doesn’t seem like downgrading would be a wise thing to do if it meant also downgrading KDE. I also see you are telling me to choose to double click triggers > New Window under View > General. I have done this and nothing happens.

My version is 25.12.1

Right. Seems that this double click (that I sugested) is only for background.

I think that the only option is right click in the folder > New window. Maybe you can do a request in bugtracker:

i had to close and re open dolphin to get the change to take effect.
