Using:
Debian 13.3 Trixie, with KWin, KDE Plasma v6.3.6 using wayland.
On a system that has:
AMD 7900XTX GPU
AMD 7950X CPU
Gigabye X670E Aorus Extreme
128-GiB DDR5 RAM
Samsung 9100 2-TB NVMe
All drivers are updates, system is updated.
When I open,
Folders, Applications or Files, the GUI tends to first appear extremely large,
Then 1 to 2 sometimes 3 seconds after opening them goes back to normal.
This happens every single time.
I don’t know if this is a Plasma, Kwin, KDE or Wayland issue.
I don’t know.
I checked all drivers, rebooted my system several times,
check all hardware and even checked if the system is recognizing the hardware properly.
But for some odd reason this continues to happen.
It’s getting annoying, that I am tempted to switch distros.
But I don’t want to start all over again, so I am trying to find ways to fix it.
I am hoping someone can help me with a solution for this.
in my opinion, strait debian is not the best plasma experience and unless you want to delve into the guts of administering the plasma desktop integration yourself, then it’s better to go with a distro that has done that work for you.
if you want to stay on debian, then i would recommend kubuntu LTS which is still on plasma 5 and working quite well… the plasma 6 LTS will be out in a few of months.
fedora KDE also offers an excellent implementation, but the release is semi-rolling so not as stable as and LTS release… the software versions tend to be fresher tho.
I have been contemplating switching distros to one that has,
more up to date OS.
Kernel v6.18.5+LTS
Plasma v6.6
And everything else that is newer.
I Just have to figure out which.
Having to restart all over again, is going to be extremely stressful.
Not to mention that if I go with Fedora, as also thought about Fedora 43 KDE Plasma version
I would have to relearn all brand-new commands,
of redhat.
Then I have to decide if I want Atomic Release from Fedora or point release or rolling release.
Friends tell me to stay away from Silverblue (immutable) version because I can’t customize,
the operating system on how I like it. (don’t know how true that is),
Because I never tested immutable OS’s.
I will NOT touch Ubuntu with a 100-foot pole though.
With other distros, I have to worry about, if it will stay for the long term,
Because understand and I know people have lives, and any distro based off the mainline,
can collapse any time do to people going on a hiatus or something.
That was my thought process when I first picked Debian.
I thought about CachyOS, but I just don’t like the -S and -Sy and -Syu etc etc.
(to me) it’s just stressful. Maybe because I don’t understand it, and I am a bit stubborn. LOL
Right now the strong contenders are Fedora 43 and CachyOS.
Sorry for the bible text, I just have a lot on my mind when it comes to this.
A friend recommended Neptune 9 OS, as well. it’s based on Debian.
Going to test all of them out on virtual machine first, which will take a while.
This is my hardware setup, currently on vanilla Debian 13.3 trixie.
I like up-to-date software, but I also don’t want my system to crack with a rolling release,
so my friends said stay with point releases.
I don’t mind tinkering, and I love the terminal, as I am not afraid of it,
I just don’t want to be spending 10 hours fixing 1 thing, if you know what I mean? lol
I believe Fedora 43 will be my next train stop
I love Debian, but too many things are happening that is making me sad.
I know I know it sounds weird that I have feelings for digital 1 and zeros.
But you know what I mean. Anyway,
As I was saying, too many little things are breaking and lots of little bugs are happening,
That sometimes I get really annoying and frustrated. And ya, I know I will have bugs and things in any OS. I understand that.
But with being so far back in the Plasma version of Debian in v6.3.6
And the Kernel in v6.12.3, then the bugs and the splash error notices on many apps,
And the GUI every time I open a window, app or file the window GUI gets extremely large,
then 1 or 2 seconds after it goes back to normal, as this happens every single time.
Things like this just gets to me.
And yes I know Linux OS itself os not all fletched out as they say,
So yes, I do try to take it in stride knowing people are working on it.
But I feel left behind, while others are moving forwards.
Specially with my hardware setup.
didn’t mean to imply you weren’t capable, it’s just that some of us actually like to get things done with their computer rather that play whack-a-mole with problems.
all i can tell you is plasma on kubuntu 24.04 X11 is as good as it gets and i don’t have any of these weird issues you are having, that’s not normal.
also, my kernel version is 6.14.0-37-generic, so not all that far behind
Totally disagree. I completely stopped using kubuntu after 24.04 something. After years of using it without any serious issues it was bonkers how many problems I encountered. I couldn’t care less about newer this and that. This forum’s loaded with issues on the latest this and that.
Mind you, whereas default debian focuses on gnome mostly and doesn’t seem to bother with plasma at all, as I mentioned before, the MX team seems to be on top of it. Whereas kubuntu had problems at one point or another, this one had ZERO issues. Not a single one.
the MX team is probably going to do better than the strait debian release
same is likely true for Q4OS, which also has plasma as one of their exclusive DEs
it’s a matter of effort and debian just provides the packages and little else in terms of curation.
if you want the latest, there tuxedo which seems to want to do a professional job of managing a plasma DE.
my point about kubuntu is that along with the large debian library and user base, in addition you also get excellent hardware support and point and click proprietary driver installation because it based on ubuntu.
