I recently updated from Kubuntu 24.04 to 26.04 via
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/QuestingUpgrades/Kubuntu
I used PIM Data Exporter to export files just before I upgraded, planning to import them back into 26.04, however I get an error ‘unable to open file’
I’ve imported other data using KMail → Tools → Import from another email client
but I’d like to import all of my other settings as well. I have opened the export file in Ark, so the data is there. Is there something I’m doing wrong?
ark opening the zip is fine. pim data exporter still dies on big exports or when kontact bits are still running.
quit kmail / korganizer / kaddressbook, then:
akonadictl stop
retry the import. if the zip is multi-GB that tool often just says unable to open file. split it: mail via KMail import wizard, then smaller exports for settings/calendars.
also make sure the file ends in .zip. older exporter builds wrote no extension and the importer refuses them until you rename.
say roughly how big the export is.
thanks nite_route – the .zip archive is 2.4 GB.
Stopping akonadi still resulted in the same error.
I’ve now created another problem in that when trying to remove my previous imports, I deleted all of my folders and disconnected the server…
yeah 2.4gb is past what pim data exporter can swallow for me. that tool just dies on big zips.
for the disconnected server / missing folders:
-open kmail
-Settings → Configure KMail → Accounts
-check the imap account is still there and enabled
-if u wiped it, add the imap account again (same server/user). folders should resync from the server if the mail still lives there
for the 2.4gb zip:
-open it in ark
-pull out smaller chunks (mail / calendar / contacts folders inside)
-import those with KMail → Tools → Import Messages (and the matching tools for calendar/contacts)
dont bother retrying the whole 2.4gb through pim data exporter.
that makes sense.
the unzipped file contains a number of folders, which don’t necessarily match the .local->share->local-mail folder.
and only the mails and calendar folder contain a .zip file.
is it possible to just copy (for example) the text document in identities to the folder where akonadi will look for it?
