Plasma 6.0 Wayland session

I’m using KDE NEON 6.0. After updating Plasma to version 6.0 (currently plasmashell 6.0.2), the Wayland session stopped working. When you try to log in, a black screen appears with a blinking cursor and then the system returns to the login screen. After calling dbus-run-session in the terminal, startplasma-wayland receives:

This part seems like the most prominent:

It looks like the update was not done correctly and some packages did not update it install successfully.

Try to run apt update and apt full-upgrade again and notice any errors reported.

without changes. of course, X11 starts without a problem.

That means that just the kwin-wayalnd package is broken, while the kwin-x11 package is up to date with the kwin-common and the rest of the kwin packages.

Can you show the output of dpkg -l "kwin*" ?

sudo dpkg -l “kwin*”

That looks fine. I’m pretty sure that there’s a binary mismatch between kwin executables and libraries that you have installed, because that’s the only reasoning that makes sense when you see “undefined symbole” errors.

I recommend trying to run this regardless and see if it solves the problem:

sudo apt install --reinstall kwin-wayland kwin-x11 kwin-common \
   qt6-wayland libwayland-bin libwayland-client0 libwayland-server0

Without changes. Still:

/usr/bin/kwin_wayland: symbol lookup error: /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libkwin.so.6: undefined symbol: wl_client_add_destroy_late_listener

So I believe I read this error incorrectly at first - it’s not a conflict between kwin-wayalnd and kwin-common - it is that libkwin.so.6 is loaded by kwin_wayland and libkwin.so.6 can’t load the symbol wl_client_add_destroy_late_listener that should be in libwayland-server.so from the libwayland-server0 package.

One way to verify that the correct symbol is in the library is to run strings /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libwayland-server.so.0 | grep wl_client_add_destroy_late_listener - if it repeats the symbol name, then that means the symbol exists and should have been loaded. If there’s no output then that means that the symbol indeed is missing and you need to get the correct version of libwayland-server0 to reinstall.

sudo apt install libwayland-server0=1.22.0-0xneon+22.04+jammy+release+build21 - solves the issue. KDE NEON still wants to load the old version as an update. I managed to start the session but it is completely unstable. After two clicks, a black screen appears. When I find some time, I will give up KDE NEON and switch to something else.

Thanks.

I know that KDE Neon “user edition” suffered some packaging issues when Plasma 6 moved from testing to the “user edition” - so that may be a lingering effect.

I personally am enjoying a very stable experience on Neon testing. I wouldn’t recommend this to “normal users”, but if you know what you are doing enough to use apt install package=version then you may also find Neon testing to be stable and useful.

The upgrade from “user” to testing is simply creating a file called /etc/apt/sources.list.d/neon-testing.list with the content:

deb http://archive.neon.kde.org/testing jammy main
deb-src http://archive.neon.kde.org/testing jammy main

There’s no need to remove any existing repos.

So looking at the libwayland builds in Neon, neither the “release” (user edition) nor the “stable” (testing) are… well… stable. I’m not 100% sure what it means because packages are created.

On my system, with both release and stable repos, the output of apt policy looks like this:

$ apt policy libwayland-server0
libwayland-server0:
  Installed: 1.22.0-0xneon+22.04+jammy+stable+build19
  Candidate: 1.22.0-0xneon+22.04+jammy+stable+build19
  Version table:
 *** 1.22.0-0xneon+22.04+jammy+stable+build19 500
        500 http://archive.neon.kde.org/testing jammy/main amd64 Packages

        500 http://archive.neon.kde.org/release jammy/main amd64 Packages
...

So I’m using build19, and apt claims its the “latest”. It does work well for me without crashes :person_shrugging:

sudo apt-cache policy libwayland-server0

It looks like you have 1.20 installed. I thought you said that you installed 1.22?

I don’t think 1.20 is going to work - I think Plasma 6 requires 1.22, and there’s no reason for it to be installed: it looks like it is installed from Ubuntu 22.04’s parent repos, not from Neon.

Yes, because KDE NEON downgrades this package by default. I manually installed 1.22, but Discover offers version 1.20 when updating. I reinstalled it because Wayland doesn’t work stably anyway.

I just checked - Neon never built wayland 1.20 - the first build from 2022 was 1.21.

It is possible you have wayland 1.20 manually pinned - check by running apt-mark showhold - it should show nothing at all. If it does show nothing, try grep -ri wayland /etc/apt/preferences* .

If neither of these show anything, then I can’t think of a reason apt would prefer the old and not good version.

N.B.
I looked again at your policy output - 1.20 shows priority as 1100. This must be manual: there’s nothing automatic that sets “1100”. There must be an /etc/apt/preferences file that sets this - maybe not even directly by name but maybe something like “always prefer Ubuntu security updates” or something. This will mess up your day when trying to use Neon.

After installing Plasma 6.0, I had to manually install it to run even X11. Truth be told, I did it the best I could. Maybe something got installed then.

Se if you have a /etc/apt/preferences file or any /etc/apt/preferences.d/ file that sets priority 1100 and remove it - that is a manual file that should probably not be there.

grep -ri wayland /etc/apt/preferences*
/etc/apt/preferences.d/98-jammy-overrides:Package: libwayland-bin
/etc/apt/preferences.d/98-jammy-overrides:Package: libwayland-client0
/etc/apt/preferences.d/98-jammy-overrides:Package: libwayland-cursor0
/etc/apt/preferences.d/98-jammy-overrides:Package: libwayland-dev
/etc/apt/preferences.d/98-jammy-overrides:Package: libwayland-doc
/etc/apt/preferences.d/98-jammy-overrides:Package: libwayland-egl1
/etc/apt/preferences.d/98-jammy-overrides:Package: libwayland-egl-backend-dev
/etc/apt/preferences.d/98-jammy-overrides:Package: libwayland-server0

hm. I have a 99-jammy-overrides that does not list libwayland by name. I suggest to remove that file (keep it somewhere aside in case you need anything from it). and try a full upgrade.

Maybe run dpkg -S /etc/apt/preferences.d/98-jammy-overrides to see if it comes from some package.

This time it works. After 5 minutes it looks stable.
Thank you!
