How to test? KDE neon Testing Edition is still at Plasma 6.7.
Edit: openSUSE Krypton has Plasma 6.8 Beta ![]()
We like new features, but we also value stability, so I hope KDE Plasma 6.8 will be up to the task.
Just a quick note about the hibernation session error: the message says “unlock failed,” as if an incorrect password had been entered, when that’s not the case at all. This bug is really strange, isn’t it?
Can someone tell us where to find it or post a link to try out Plasma 6.8? Thanks!
I can’t find this beta—can you help us with a link or something?
This is not something you just download and install. You will need to set your distro repos to testing or unstable or something like that (it changes from distro to distro) and upgrade.
What distro are you using?
Also, no offense, and we really appreciate your willingness to help, but if you have to ask, maybe this is not for you? That said, if you still want to venture valiantly where no user has ventured before, let us know what Linux you are running.
As for me, here’s how I do it, but given how you describe the process to get there, I’ll leave that to the more experienced folks. I already have enough on my plate dealing with the weird bugs in a stable version and all its updates ![]()
As for me, here’s
Operating System: KDE neon User Edition
KDE Plasma Version: 6.7.5
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.30.0
Qt Version: 6.11.1
Kernel Version: 7.0.0-31-generic (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: Wayland
hanabi wallpaper!
We wish KDE another 30 years of success and, above all, more stable software.
And you’re right! We’ll leave the Plasma 6.8 testing to the bearded guys, even if the message suggests otherwise?
Hey! I’m not bearded ![]()
Only 5 days until it releases now!
i am sure i am posting in the wrong place but i run a plex server but want to switch to steam os as a daily driver. what are the pitfalls if i can ask. i run kde neon atm and can’t get games to play at all so was thinking i could have best of both words with steam os. please tell me if wrong i hate to reforment and find out i am wrong the server means more to me then being able to play games. thanks.
Did you install Steam distribution packages (stream-installer) or from a different source?
I haven’t played anything lately but the Steam client I had installed for Neon worked for all games in my library I had tried.
Versions 6.6 and 6.7 degraded stability and performance, this rushed 6.8 will hits Plasma really hard.
6.5 was truly a good release, I was running it for 2 or 3 days without any freezing or crashes.
From 6.6, you can’t trust the ability of the desktop to survive doing basic tasks.
Plasma 6.8 is not rushed. What makes you think it is? Developers include what is ready. What is not, is pushed to the next release, or the next, or the next. KDE is not a company and we are not at all pressured to produce a given product by an established date. What works, goes in, what doesn’t stays out.
As for instabilities, I haven’t notices any of that. Indeed, in the last run of 3 or 4 versions, I have experienced exactly 0 crashes. If you have concrete evidence of what you are saying and can reproduce specific problems, please write bug reports:
May be your machines are powerful enough to not feel the changes, or my medium and cheap laptops (i3-5005U and i3-i3-1005g1) are not anymore capable of running latest Plasma versions. I installed Plasma on them since 2020, and it was truly a great desktop, but with latest versions it feels Plasma is loosing its speed and makes some features unusable and laggy, like the blur, night light (since 6.2), and latest animations (in maximize/minimize windows, windows switcher, logout screen…) changed in 6.6.
All this is bearable, what is frustrating is the freezing and crashes happening when opening some apps like Scribus, or when you let the machine running for the whole day, at any moment you see Plasma crashes and panel disappearing then reappearing after 1 minute or two. I reverted to 6.18 kernel but the experience is the same as 7.2. I don’t know the true culprit either new Plasma versions or something is dragging intel cpus with mesa driver.
Turn off effects and you can run the latest Plasma on a machine with Core 2 Duo @ 2GHz from 2008. I know because I’ve done it—live in front of an audience. Plasma should be fine on an i3. Not great, but yes fine.
If you are having issues, what you should do is turn off effects, disable widgets you may be using (i had crashes at one point and it is was a third party calendaring widget causing them), monitor carefully the apps you are running (Scribus is not a core Plasma component, it is not even a KDE a app), make notes when and where the problems arise, and file bugs in the appropriate projects.
What you should not do is assume that everybody is having the same problems and you should stop saying things like “Plasma is unstable”, because it is not. It is unstable for you, and the reasons can be multiple and have nothing to do with Plasma.
