Made a fresh install of Kubuntu 26.04.1. After installing the Nvidia proprietary driver and letting the machine go to sleep, woke the machine to find:
“The screen locker is broken and unlocking is not possible anymore…”
After rebooting the machine, found that plasmashell would crash repeatedly after logging in and never recover, even after multiple reboots and clearing the user .config directory.
What version of the driver? Versions above 580 don’t support the GTX 1000 series cards.
nvidia-driver-580 precisely
The driver version shouldn’t be a problem then.
Can you share more details of the logs you see, in case that helps to pinpoint the issue better?
I’ve been able to work around the issue by reinstalling and sticking with the xserver-xorg-video-nouveau driver, but I fear I may encounter different compatibility issues or feature limitations with that one. I can try to reproduce the issue and share the log if you can let me know the location of the log file of interest?
for the plasmashell crash loop grab these:

cat /proc/driver/nvidia/version
if ~/.xsession-errors exists paste the tail of that too.
reproduce once on the proprietary driver then paste those. the plasmashell user unit log is the useful one when the locker dies with it.
Interestingly, it seems I’m not able to reproduce the issue when I install the driver through apt instead of ubuntu-drivers
Never mind. Reproduced after the monitor was blacked out after timeout, then was stuck in crash loop on wake.

i think the dpms timeout is killing nvidia memory on wake and plasmashell falls over with it. your log has libEGL_nvidia stuck in a cond wait, then kwin cant reopen /dev/dri/renderD128 (No such device). thats the classic proprietary sleep path, not a random plasmashell bug.
try doin this:
enable the nvidia sleep helpers:
sudo systemctl enable nvidia-suspend.service nvidia-hibernate.service nvidia-resume.service
sudo systemctl start nvidia-suspend.service nvidia-hibernate.service nvidia-resume.service
add to /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-power.conf :
options nvidia NVreg_PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations=1 NVreg_TemporaryFilePath=/var/tmp
then:
sudo update-initramfs -u
sudo reboot
as a quick test b4 that, System Settings → Power Management → turn screen energy saving / turn off screen off, leave the box idle, wake it. if it holds with blanking disabled, the sleep path is confirmed.
if wayland keeps dying after the modprobe bits, log into Plasma (X11) once with the 580 driver and see if wake survives there.
paste systemctl is-enabled nvidia-suspend nvidia-hibernate nvidia-resume after step 1 if anything fails to enable.
Followed the steps as described but the issue is still occurring.

if the 3 services are on and it still dies on x11 too, check the preserve flag actually loaded
-cat /proc/driver/nvidia/params | rg -i Preserve
-/var/tmp needs free space (that TemporaryFilePath)
-id try rolling nvidia back to 550 for a bit on a 1060. 580 has been rough on older cards for me after blanking
also kill screen blank totally for a day:
