Plasmashell uses 50GB ram

Since upgrade to Plasma 6.3.0 under KDE Neon 6.2, my plasmashell sometimes uses most of my memory. I have 64 GB, but thats still not enough for plasma. It even sometimes uses so much, so that the system freezes. Right now:

Thats a bug, right?

After restarting plasma (systemctl --user restart plasma-plasmashell) it goes back to ~600 MB

Yea I’d say a HUGE bug. I just checked and I get 4.5 GIGS before restarting the desktop shell.

Hi - just to check, what all widgets do you have active on your panel(s) or desktop? If I remember correctly, widgets run under the overall plasmashell process, so if one of those is running out of control and using a ton of memory, it’ll show up there.

Indeed, that’s typically the origin of memory leaks in plasma.
Since “stock” plasma is much better tested, and those issues never go unnoticed and are easy to fix for developers.

Try to disable one by one your widgets. The plasma theme can be the problem as well.

You can also use heaptrack to determine the leak origin.

Thanks all for Feedback. I have disabled the two widgets I used (image frame and network stats) and till now, the issues hasn’t occured again - plasma is constantly using around 700-800 MB which is ok.

Ah, good! Just for your reference - if one of those widgets is the “Media Frame”, then you might be running into this bug: 386315 – Media Frame widget memory leak
