Quick tile window to the bottom/top sudden behaviour change

I use quick tile window feature a lot. Today, all of a sudden, when I press Meta+Down or Meta+Up to tile a window to the bottom/top half of the screen, that’s no longer the case in one of the three monitors. Instead, the split happens at a seemingly arbitrary grid of something like 70%/30%. It happens with any program, and only in that screen particular screen. In other monitors, it works as usual (50%/50%).

What happened and how can I fix it?

I’m using Plasma 5.27.12 in Kubuntu 24.04 LTS.

you probably have one or more windows still in what i call quick tile purgatory.

when you quick tile two or more windows to a screen you can adjust the split lines by dragging the resize handle where the windows meet.

so if you tile one window to the top half and another window to the bottom half you can drag where they meet into a new position… if you were to then close or untile one of those windows quick tile will still remember where it was dragged to.

the next time you quick tile a window on that screen it will send the window the old split line config.

the only way out is to untile all the windows on that screen and start over.

I don’t have my Linux laptop at hand but I’ve tested in a virtual machine and I’m unable to do that, but you gave me something to investigate. After some trial and error I discovered that if I resize a window while keeping the Alt key pressed, it resets the tile grid to that position. I probably did that by mistake.

TIL: using alt + resize on one of the quick tile borders keeps the quick tile purgatory !

even when only one window is quick tiled.

good to know.
