I want to send my laptop in to be repaired.
Before doing so I’ve backed up my userspace and would like to remove all the files.
I used rync to achieve this and just pointed it at /home/$USER.
My question is whether pointing rm -rf at /home/$USER will break my KDE since I know that at least some of the system settings are stored in ~/.config.
Does KDE have backup files stored in /etc, /var, etc. that it can depend on or
do I need to modify my rm command to avoid specific hidden dirs?
Could the repairs be implemented if the SSD/HDD is removed from the machine? Or perhaps you could replace the SSD/HDD with another similar unit that doesn’t contain sensitive and/or configuration data?
I think I would look into this before rm’ing my /home/$USER. Even though you’ve backed this up including all the hidden files/dirs, I’d still be worried something would get messed up.
I agree. Just remove the drive and send it. I assume the repair is just physical / hardware related.
What’s the issue and the cost going to be?
What model laptop?
Did you encrypt the disk?
If so the repairer cannot see any of your files.
I think that they could if my boot partition is separate from my other partitions. It is something that I haven’t looked into but should
I haven’t had a quote on the cost. The laptop is a lemur pro 13 from system76. I should look into removing the SSD before sending
I think that disk encryption needs to be down from the moment you boot your distro, and in which I did not. I think that disk encrypt is something that I wasn’t comfortable with at the time, and even now I still feel hesitant about it even though I’ve more competent with tools like GPG nowadays
I have been using full disk encryption for a few years and not encountered any issues.
So long as you keep a secure record of the unlock password you can always get to your data.
