Request: Full Chinese (Simplified) Localization for Entire Kdenlive Interface, Including Settings and All Menus

Hello Kdenlive team and community,

First, thank you for developing such a powerful, free, and open-source video editor — Kdenlive has become my daily go-to tool!

I’m writing from a Chinese-speaking user perspective (Simplified Chinese / zh_CN). Currently, Kdenlive already has partial support for Chinese, and many core parts of the UI are translated. However, a significant portion of the interface still remains in English, especially:

  • The entire Settings / Configure Kdenlive dialog (all tabs: General, Playback, Environment, etc.)

  • Many preference pages, tooltips, and advanced options

  • Some dialog boxes (e.g., proxy clip settings, render profiles, effect/transition parameter windows)

  • Error messages, status bar texts, and miscellaneous strings

This makes it harder for Chinese users (especially beginners or non-technical ones) to fully understand and utilize the software comfortably.

I checked the KDE l10n statistics and noticed that while the overall translation coverage is quite good for many KDE apps, Kdenlive’s zh_CN translation seems incomplete in some areas — or perhaps the missing strings are not yet pulled into the builds.

Would it be possible to:

  1. Prioritize completing the zh_CN translation for all remaining English strings in Kdenlive (especially configuration dialogs and settings-related UI)?

  2. Ensure that once fully translated, the Chinese language pack is properly included in future releases/AppImages/Flatpaks/standalone Windows builds — so users can simply switch to Chinese via Help > Switch Application Language without extra steps?

  3. If the translation is already 100% on the l10n server but not showing up in the app, is there a known packaging or build issue we can look into?

I (and many other Chinese users) would be very happy to help if needed — for example, by reviewing existing translations, suggesting improvements for natural Chinese phrasing, or even contributing new translations via the KDE localization platform (though I’m not a regular translator yet).

Thank you in advance for considering this request! Full native Chinese support would make Kdenlive much more accessible to a huge community in China and among Chinese-speaking creators worldwide.

Hi @CHENG_C, and welcome to the forum and community.

Thank you for your suggestion. Like any other FOSS project, Kdenlive is the work of enthusiasts volunteering their free time to develop and maintain the software. The surrounding ecosystem with translation, documentation, tutorials, and community support is also only possible by the work of volunteers.

If you want Kdenlive to be fully translated to Chinese you are very welcome to join the group of translators and start working on it. You’ll find links to the various areas where you can help on the Kdenlive home page under Get Involved.

Looking forward to your contribution making Kdenlive easier to access and use!

Looks like the same OP from https://bugs.kde.org/516635

The real effort is to find strings that haven’t been exposed to translation. Once that happens then those results propogate down to translators. So efforts need to be concentrated on tickets like this one:
