Reveal text incrementally (not using typewriter effect)

Hi!

I was a bit suprised to not find a way to animate / expand a paragraph at the time when using a title clip.

I wanted to show some text, and then after a while have some more text appear. Do I need to create two title clips and duplicate paragraph 1 on both? It feels inefficient and prone to error when updating.

I guess my question is this: Is it possible to step by step reveal text in a title clip with full control of timing, without duplicating text? How would you do it?

(typewriter is not offering enough control, expanding by line is not what I am after)

You can use the Alpha Shapes or Crop, Scale and Tilt effects on a title clip to control what is visible when and where. And for more complex shapes use the Rotoscope effect.

Ok, so the strategy is then to just have the title clip as a kind of container for the full text and then use separate effects (such as crop) to reveal it.

I guess I was a bit fooled by the animation tab and typewriter within the title clip creator and thought that that was where I should look.

PS. And can I consider rotoscoping as a kind of the more general effect which I can use for revealing the text in any crazy way I want?

Thanks from a beginner!

Yes, but also keep in mind that unless you play with the viewports in the title editor, any text that extends beyond the project’s dimensions is cut off. In other words, you cannot have a title clip with text that extends beyond the bottom of the screen and simply scroll it up - whatever is below the screen is not going to be shown.

Yes, that can be misleading

Yes. You could also use the Shapes Alpha effect which allows to use images or even videos with greyscale for the reveal.

You can create two title clips and show them both at the same time … just put the text you want to appear later in a separate clip and composite it with the initial text on a separate track at the time you want it to appear.

You can stack as many separate title clips as you please, each with its own effect and timing for when and how it appears. I do that sort of thing all the time.

Yes, but that does not scale very well. If I want to reveal 4 paragraphs I need 4 tracks, just for the text! But thanks anyway!

If it starts getting crazy like that you can put all those tracks on a separate sequence, then just nest that sequence into your timeline on a single track.

But yeah, if masking whats on a single title clip works for you, that’s fine too - use the best tool for the job. I was just noting that you don’t have to duplicate the text to split it over multiple titles, or if you want to use different effects to display each new piece etc.
