Hi, I just got upgraded to Dolphin version 25.04.0 and I noticed that thumbnail previews are now smaller by default (getting to full size when you hover over them). I am in icon view mode and have the default icon size and preview icon size sliders both maxed out already. Previously, I could get the thumbnail previews for videos for example to be approximately this size by default:
…Now, however, when i toggle to show previews, the size is reduced by default, only expanding to the full size for the thumbnail you hover your mouse over.
Is there a way to get back to the full size previews by default? Although the new look makes a cool effect as you move your mouse across your media files, having all this extra white space just looks ugly to me and a waste of space, so I would like to go back to how it was before… Is there a way to do that? Thanks!
Hi! That’s interesting - so on your device, hovering over a video thumbnail changes the size of the thumbnail and preview frames? Do you happen to have a screenshot of that effect occurring?
For what it’s worth, I’m not seeing that happen on my Fedora KDE 42 device:

Hi! Yes, actually i found out it’s not consistent but i can re-create it… So if i don’t have Dolphin open and i open a fresh window, then go to my Videos folder (or possibly just anywhere on my Home directory?) Then the videos behave as i described (see below for how it looks hovering over)
If i then go to look at media on an external drive, the thumbnails behave as normal, and STAY behaving as they normally had been behaving prior to the recent update… So after visiting an external drive and coming back to the Videos folder (without closing Dolphin in between) this is how it looks (and how i want it to always look)
I am on Manjaro myself if that is affecting anything.
I played around with it a bit more just now, and it seems to have nothing to do with external drives… You can see that i have a link to my videos folder in my places. If i middle click to open it up in a new tab in the background, that new tab will have the typical (pre-update) thumbnail behavior. If however, i go to my Home directory first and then open the folder in the same tab (either double clicking the actual folder in Home or clicking my link in Places) then the thumbnails will be tiny by default, only enlarging on hover. If I am in a different folder (not Home) and i click my link in my Places (or a bookmark i saved to the same videos folder) to open up Videos in the same tab, then the icon behavior will vary depending on whether i have opened the folder from my Home directory in that tab yet.
So basically, once any tab has opened my Home directory it won’t display the full size thumbnails. Visiting an external drive may “reset” the tab somehow though.
Hmm…this sounds kind of like the issue reported here: 499820 – Some thumbnails with preview are showing in smaller size
That bug was marked as fixed because the reporter could no longer reproduce it, but perhaps the circumstances that cause it have changed?
If you can detail out those steps to reproduce the issue and under what circumstances it no longer shows up, then this might make sense to file as a bug report, referencing that previous one above
