Scribus is randomly killing Plasma desktop

Yesterday and also today, Scribus killed Plasma desktop, it happens randomely when saving or clicking on any component when editing just small files inside Scribus.

Operating System: Manjaro Linux
KDE Plasma Version: 6.7.5
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.30.0
Qt Version: 6.11.2
Kernel Version: 7.2.7-1-MANJARO (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: Wayland

I tested with kernel 6.18 and it distorts the whole desktop graphics with some white horizontal line at bottom panel and the desktop also freezes at random times while using basic apps like Libreoffice, firefox, inkscape,…

i think the intel gpu is hanging in mesa and taking plasmashell with it. your log has i915 GPU HANG in QSGRenderThread then plasmash:gdrv0, then plasmashell aborts. scribus is just the app that trips it.

try doin this:

  1. run scribus on x11 once (log out, pick Plasma (X11) at the login session menu) and see if it still kills the desktop
  2. update mesa / linux-firmware if manjaro has newer sitting in repos
  3. as a test boot param add i915.enable_psr=0 in /etc/default/grub, then sudo update-grub and reboot
  4. paste: inxi -Gxxz and glxinfo -B | head -20

if x11 holds up and wayland dies, use x11 for scribus work for now. also worth filing upstream against mesa/i915 with that gpu hang dump from /sys/class/drm/card1/error.

that kioworker bt is a follow-on crash. plasmashell is already dying from the i915 hang (QSGRenderThread + plasmash:gdrv0 in mesa), then kioworker hits setKillFlag on a bad pointer while everything is tearing down. so the root is still the gpu hang, scribus just trips it.

keep the earlier steps:

  • Plasma (X11) for scribus once
  • i915.enable_psr=0 in grub + update-grub + reboot
  • update mesa / linux-firmware if manjaro has newer

extra while youre in:
Dolphin → Configure → Interface → turn Previews off for a bit (cuts kioworker thumbnail jobs)
and when it hangs again grab:

file that error dump + the i915 GPU HANG lines upstream (mesa/i915). the KIO bt alone will look like a kio bug but its riding the gpu reset.

I rebooted, for now before any indication of that CPU HANG error, when I open specifically Scribus, this happens to Plasma panel with horizontal lines, and desktop wallpaper becomes sometimes white and sometimes black

that panel stripe + wallpaper flip when u open scribus is still the render path going weird for me.

if either keeps the panel clean, use the xcb launch for scribus work for now. still worth the i915.enable_psr=0 grub line from earlier if u havent tried it.

I tried both env vars but the same crash happens even with small text or shape editing,

I even tested with kernel 6.18 LTS, and even downgraded mesa packages from 26.2.3 > 26.2.2 > 26.2.1 > 26.1.8 and rebooted many times but the same error happens.

I also tested for whole day without launching Scribus, and launched many apps: firefox, gimp, inkscape, writer, thundebird, darktable, okular, eclipse… and that CPU HANG never appeared at all in my log.

It’s truly weird how a qt5 like Scribus can crash the whole Plasma desktop.

yeah scribus being the only trip is rough. still looks like the i915 render path dying when that qt5 app starts painting.

id try:
-in scribus prefs under Display, turn off OpenGL / GPU accel if that toggle is there
-QT_QUICK_BACKEND=software scribus
-INTEL_DEBUG=norbc scribus
-grub: add i915.enable_fbc=0 next to the psr line if u already put i915.enable_psr=0, then sudo update-grub and reboot
-run the scribus appimage from scribus.net once outside the distro package

if the appimage stays clean, the manjaro scribus build/deps are the problem.
