I am trying to get the notification icon on the task bar to only show the little dot when there actually are notifications. At the moment it shows the dot whether there are notifications or not:
As you can see the bell icon displays a dot even though there are no notifications. Can I somehow change that to only show a dot/badge when there actually are notifications?
Do you still observe that with the default Breeze icons? (It may be an issue with the icon theme that’s in use there?)
My setup doesn’t even show the bell at all when there are no notifications. Are you using a plasma theme which has icons or do you use the panel colorizer by any chance?

Notifications:
Plasma themes are in ~/.local/share/plasma/desktoptheme.
Anywho…Zafiro comes in a bunch of variations. For the sake of it I downloaded a couple to check if the plasma theme comes with separate icons. At least one of them does. And from the looks of it, it matches your notification icon. I suggest to try a default plasma theme to check if the issue is still there.
That doesn’t explain why you have a colored systray though. Hence my question “do you use the panel colorizer”?
In other words,here’s your “problem”. Your plasma theme, whatever zafiro version you’re using, has icons in it. Haven’t looked yet why the dot remains, but it’s a start.
And here’s that same plasma theme without the icon directory in it.
But um…unless I’m wrong, the dot will show as long as there are notifications, regardless if they’re already checked. The dot should go if you clean up notifications.
