Do you know you have this data on hover over the drives in the places panel ?
I think at least majority of users would prefer to keep it as it is, a cleaner sidebar with the existing bars giving a rough idea of free space, and more details on hover.
I know, but if you ever need to check 10 drives to see where to move something, you would have to wait and check them one by one or go to a diferent place to see them all, I don’t understand this fight against extra options.
Like there wouldn’t be an option to just choose one or the other.
I don’t think there would be objections from users to have such an extra option (unless it comes enabled as default).
I think it’s just up to Dolphin developers to judge the costs and benefits if you report this at bugs.kde.org as a feature request to be added to wishlist.

Given enough the drives element have enough height, it could simpler draw a heighter capacity bar with the text on top adapting itself.

I do think this mockup makes the places/drives panel seem very “heavy” compared to the current sleek look, it immediately captures my attention as the main point of focus, compared next to the folders view panel.
Also, as another downside it’ll make the drives grow in height and use up more space for users with smaller icons, so you’ll be able to fit less drives into view:
I’d suggest displaying the free space on the same level as the drive name instead, anchored to the right. Of course this might introduce problems with very long drive names that will have to be considered instead.
I love Dolphin file manager the way it is now, and I think it could be improved futher, but I wouldn’t prefer my Dolphin window to become too “crowded” by making drive bars thicker and overlaying detailed information on it or next to drive labels, something that might be useful only in some rare cases, in addition to the rough idea about free space the current drive bars already give very nicely.
That was just an example, but I’m sure there is a more simple design, would just make life easy for multitasking, an extra click, an extra second to hover, it adds up.
I’m sure there can be a better method than the one shown in the picture. Is not just me that would benefit from this option, my friends that just moved to Linux would like that too.
so your use case is that you have a file or folder that you need to move but you don’t know where to move to until you scan all of your available drives to see which one can fit it?
that seems very niche.
most ppl when sorting/moving things have some kind of organization in mind already so they can find it again later.
how would even remember where you put something with this approach?

as for the look, i prefer how it looks now with only a bar to indicate it’s percent used… it provides enough of a visual to keep tabs on drives that might fill up like backup storage or game partitions.
if i need more detail then there are lots of other ways to get at that information (both in dolphin and outside of it).
no wonder a lot of people hate linux , I know people have the best intentions , but you can’t just be against change just because you personally don’t want it , as I said , there could be a toggle option to change how that looks , you wouldn’t need to use it if you don’t want it.
And someone above said that you can just see the percentage bar if you need it , but if you have a 500 gb drive and a 4 tb drive , a % of them doesn’t help you give an idea of how much space you have remaining.

at least with linux your ideas are heard and entertained.
but you have to realize that change for the sake of change is not progress, it’s just busy work and the talent available to make changes like this is weakly thin and already over worked (mostly for free, i might add).
if you have a more compelling use case, then feel free to present it.
windows already has what I was asking , and there are lots of apps that can add even more than that on windows, but that’s not the point.
I’m using linux for a year now , from my experience , there are a lot of nice people on linux , but at the same time there are a lot of people that kind of behave like hipsters
I know that most of the devs develop for free or for not much money, I’m always grateful for their work , I would love to help with my limited skills if I ever have the chance. I’m just worried that people don’t take advantage of the momentum that linux has right now . KDE has the lead right now.
well, exactly.
that lead is no accident… plasma is the best linux DE.
but they didn’t get to be that way by copying windows.

you can also file a “wish list” item at bugs.kde.org, but they are likely to be even more critical with out some solid rationale.
I think what we have here is just an exchange of views on a suggestion.
It’s also a good point that it might be more useful if details on free space available on the drives seen in Dolphin sidebar could be seen directly (not just on hover), which is not very difficult to implement apparently.
But it’s a also a legitimate concern for many users to see Dolphin window not too “heavy” or “crowded”, which leads us to consider if such a new feature should better be provided as an option in Dolphin settings, which might require a little more work than adding such a feature directly.

After this, it’s up to the developers to take whichever action seems more appropriate.
I don’t think anybody here would object to adding such an option to Dolphin settings.
There are only objections against including it directly without any option to keep sidebar “cleaner” , or even adding it as an option enabled as default unless it would be welcomed by majority of users.
I agree with what your general idea is for sure.
I also find it kinda weird that nothing I have found so far on Linux will just display all my devices in a window and show me their details.
Everyone says, it’s easy if you just us the terminal and I do do that, but I use filelight most of the time to see free space and mount points. It can be install as a plugin for Dolphin.It should be in your OS repos.
I come from Winblows (been solely Linux for approx. 1.5-2yrs now) and it’s GREAT to have a window that shows all the attached drives (temporary OR permanent) with there total sizes and amount of drive space available is awesome. I WISH Linux had one.
The filelight developer(s) might be convinced to do something like that as it already scans drives and lists them with their space used/spaced free details among other details such as mount points.
HOWEVER, file light in it’s current state does not have a 1 window solution, rather you need to look at each drives details separately.
Dolphin is seriously lacking in a LOT of stuff but it also has a LOT of STUFF that Winsucks explorer does not-stability, a lack of spyware/telemetry stealing crap, terminal with a hot key or display all the time, split windows same thing as terminal all the time or hotkey or mouse click to get it activated..I mean Dolphin makes Windows explorer look like a child’s toy in comparison and it is extendable with plugins.
SO, a few suggestions. Made with all good intentions and trying NOT to be a dick about it.
#1.- Go back to Winsucks if you are not happy with Linux to the point that it’s a game breaker for you. — everyone needs certain things from an OS, if you can’t get it form Linux but you can get it from Winsucks then please yourself because nobody else will. I know PLENTY of people that use both Linux and Windows for various reasons, one guy runs adobe so he has windows on a dual boot, my son is a coder and has IDE’s on both OS’s..dual boot again, etc,etc.
#2. The whole KDE doesn’t have enough volunteers to get things done fast so put up with it argument is moot now. The E.U. has decide KDE will be it’s desktop of choice and the E.U. has opened the tap on more funding for KDE. I expect there to be an increase in development just because of this. KDE in a year will look a lot better than it does now and in fact my multiple monitor display issues that I’ve had with KDE off and on for over 20 years seem to be over now - I see KDEID or whatever it is popping up and getting my 2nd display getting turned on all the time and THAT is new, at least for me and it is also an AWESOME advancement in this desktop.
MY POINT for #2 is this: it is a GREAT time to put in feature requests. I can only image there will be TON’s OF the E.U.'s country’s employees who will also want a quick glance at a window to see their storage and external device details! As a matter of fact, I’m going to put in that request also as I would also like this feature!
#3 Give some of YOUR money and/OR time to develop this feature yourself. THIS is what open source software is all about. IF you see a need and you have the skill and the time to FILL THE NEED then PLEASE DO.
