So many Issues with Wayland

That’s not quite true, because a completely satisfactory solution would only be possible if x were solved. But that’s going too far, and has to do with my age and my computer skills. In any case, I would like to thank you and everyone else: you really gave me the feeling that you wanted to help me, and that is a very, very nice feeling.

showFoto isn’t bad - but I can’t see where you would change the background if you can’t accept the default light colour…

Additionally, I’m not sure how far development will progress, as it’s basically shipped ‘alongside’ Digikam - as of mid-2024 we have ShowFoto 8.2.0.

CtrlShiftT to add text - very easy (actually nicer than xnview - except the apparent missing option to set the background).

However, having said that - I prefer my right hand annotation to the example you put in the bottom left.

However, overall, I would vote for Gwenview on X11 allowing easy selection of both foreground and background text for annotations.

Thank you, Ben.
Whether right or left, that’s a matter of taste. But I like the default background from digicam. In any case, that’s an alternative if nothing else works in xnview.

I have used Gwenview extensively, and it has a really good annotation tool. The reason I tend to prefer xnview is that Gwenview does not offer the option of no frame but with fill - and a need more time doing my work with this App.

…and the implemented picker doesn’t work any better under Wayland.

Color pickers aren’t working on wayland, anyone else seeing this?

Only now do I see that this is a very well-known Wayland problem, and we’ve been talking about it for so long.

Yes, I remember discussing this quite a while back - there have been many regressions in the last year or so… despite overall improvements, a lot of workflows (like this one) are sorely begging - and it’s one of the kinds of issues that make Windows users reluctant to quit using Windows.

When I was doing heavy image workflows in the past, I opted to dualboot… because when I got back from a studio with 300 images, it just wasn’t worth putting up with all of these papercuts when I could find better tools for the job.

Windows Dual Boot is the last option for me.

i installed a virtual machine with a windows. this is perfect for the apps that aren’t avaiable or can’t be replaced on linux. photo-editing has no special needs for 3D-support of the gpu and can be easily done in such a vm.

Many options to look at that are native/cross platform:

Pinta

yes the UI is very Gtk4 Gnome-ey. This was installed here as a flatpak (the download button should open Discover and offer it)

But I do agree a virtual machine is handy for some things. I keep one for the rare-ish things even after 25 years on Linux.

As I know, it will be supported by KDE Plasma until version 6 reaches end of life. So I would say you will have it at least 5 more years, probably more. E.g. Kubuntu 24.04 with Plasma 5 will have ubuntu based updates until 2029, critical ones until 2034 with Ubuntu Pro. And for sure 28.04 LTS will come with plasma 6 (and X11 option), so +4 years, i.e. 2033/2038. And maybe by then Wayland will be good enough and capable of basic PC tasks, after 25 years of development.

Problem with recommendation of alternative programs is that at one point, it might be easier and/or better to change desktop environment or operating system.

Huh? Trying an alternative or 2 to see if one may work for you is far easier and much less time-consuming than going through the process of installing a new OS or DE.

Please excuse me, but Windows is no longer an option for me. Whether rightly or wrongly, I have developed such an aversion to MS that I no longer wish to do this to myself.

That’s the answer that calms me the most!!! That will work perfectly with my perhaps remaining lifetime.

Thank you; I only know a few of them. I’ll take a look at them. But now that it turns out to be a Wayland problem, it won’t be any different with other software

It’s not a Wayland problem. It’s up to the software developers to make their apps/programs compatible with Wayland, not the other way around. Which is why I suggested alternatives. Their developers may have Wayland compatibility.

Why would they? They made their programs 10 years before Wayland development even started and it is for basic things, used for decades - color picker, screen sharing, display scaling, accessibility options, remote access. And all still work well on other platforms, and majority of linux distributions and desktop environments (with X). I see no benefits from Wayland at the moment.

And X11 is still great alternative to Wayland, works flawlessly for me.
Cinnamon is also great alternative to other popular DEs. There are some pros and cons comparing to Plasma 6/Wayland combo, but it can be better choice in some cases. It’s design and functionality comes closer to KDE Plasma, which is probably still the best DE for PCs. Not because they made big progress, but because of regressions all the others have made, Plasma included.

I noticed nothing more came of this observation but it sounds like it might be significant. Can it be that @Ulrich_Prokop 's system (under Wayland session) is mistakenly launching xnview in X11 mode? Or maybe the app itself is getting this wrong when launching?

Apologies if I’m overlooking a detail but it sounds from the symptoms presented very much like that is what is happening.

IF so @Ulrich_Prokop you could verify this by using the test @claydoh did above.
