Still no ISO for installing kubuntu on ARM64?

I’ve got a new Asus laptop Vivobook based on Snapdragon X Plus.

What’s the best way to install linux on it? I would prefer kubuntu.

I tried Ubuntu 26.04 LTS but it fails straight away after Try Ubuntu with some

efivarfs Not supported

Ubuntu 26.04 is still in beta. Try ubuntu 24.04 LTS or 25.10. Or you can Install debian.

Thanks for the suggestions, in my mind something LTS was past beta…

Unfortunately it still fails (same efivars).

Just tried ubuntu-25.10-desktop-arm64.iso

I couldn’t find a 24.04 LTS for ARM other than Server. Not sure that’s for me, especially having seen the same error with different iso :frowning:

I’m afraid I’m wasting my time, am I too early?

I’m happy to try a few hacks with what’s available, if suggested, if I can help.

I don’t have linux development experience but I’ve been a user for 20+ years and I have installed a few distros in this time.

Cheers

The problem is in part Qualcom not beiong overly helpful, as well as Arm being more akin to phone ROMS in that there is no real generic ISO image that can support just any Arm device. They can use different boot methods. and possibly not even using efi, and the drivers are very much closed or lacking any helpful code from Qualcomm, in the case of the Snapdragon range.

There is some (slow) work getting the Snapdragon X Elite X1E devices working, but this is entirely different from the X Plus (X1P).

Then there is this, which highlights the difficulties in Arm development.

Yeah, I could see that Q seems to be in bed with u$oft :frowning: But then I suppose Intel was not that cooperative with open-source either. I guess it means it just takes time (reverse-engineering?).

X1P vs X1E… I didn’t quite get why X1E is more advanced - it seems like there isn’t even a dev bug for X1P. I suppose this means the time estimate for when something is going to work on X1P is as long as a piece of string.

Well, thanks for shedding some light
