Suddenly slow and crashing - help!

Since 2020, I’ve edited short films in kdenlive with no issues. For the past few weeks, though, what started out as a few crashes during rendering at lossless quality is now a program that barely works. Here’s what I’m dealing with:

  • The project file takes 20-40 minutes to load, or crashes during loading
  • Rendering never completes without crashing at seemingly random places
  • The latest version (24.08.2) worked well for a week, but now won’t even load the project (it crashes during the “building sequences” stage)
  • Earlier versions of 24.08 are no better - they either take forever to load or crash during rendering, despite working perfectly well when I used them before

Here’s what I’ve done to address the problem so far, none of which have helped:

  • confirmed that my laptop comfortably meets the basic system requirements
  • purged every trace of the program I can find, including any files in the , b"Apps" folder, before installing earlier versions that used to work well
  • switched to using proxy clips for previewing
  • updated my laptop’s graphics drivers
  • changed the threads in the encoder options to 1

The only thing I can’t rule out is the project itself. I’ve added a lot of visual effects shots, mostly imported image sequences with kdenlive’s own effects manipulating them as needed. That being said, the film is only 17 minutes long, and I’d like to think kdenlive could handle it, but maybe not.

Any and all advice/tips/pointers would be greatly. I’m so close to the finish line on this film, and it would be heartbreaking to have to start over in a different program.
