I recently updated to KDE Plasma 6.4. When I use super key the app menu search opens and when I type something like “VLC” and hit enter it opens VLC player. The only problem is that the results are invisible.

The only thing I changed I deactivated the KATE and X11 to Wayland bridge tray icons. Turning them back on doesn’t help.

These are my settings:

When I turn off “Align search results down” the results are visible and shown correctly (but aligned at the top).

When I change the app menu to an alternative (app starter) the search results are visible again. When I change the app menu back it works until I reboot the PC.

Is it a bug? Should a file a bug report?

Indeed, this isn’t the standard Application Launcher - but the alternative ‘Application Menu’.

I confess I stopped using it due to it’s navigation issues… which now seem to have been fixed.

I would suggest you first create/log in a fresh USER on a clean configuration to ensure that it’s an issue with your system.

My test is pointing to it being specific to your system, and that means it’s a PEBCAK issue - your USER data, possibly something in your .config folder…

I like this menu - it negates the need to scroll by expanding sideways with other categories… often helping you to zoom in by typing more of the filename to bring it under your selection… though you can’t easily open this menu and select a ‘favourite’ from the keyboard (no access to the left column) and it doesn’t access the browser history (so if you’d been opening pages about VLC, they won’t show up there).

Perhaps I should file a comment - because the layout’s good, but there’s no option for ‘browser history’ or ‘open tabs’ which you get with krunner.

As it’s been a while, I just added a few of the options there… Another menu which stands out is the Simple Application Menu which indeed includes everything, but sadly does it vertically (very nice UI, but still - scrolling sucks compared to the horizontal pane layout.

Scrolling is mitigated by the fact that the 'Simple Application Launcher` allows you to use navigation keys (Page Down) to quickly see all options… though you can do that with the Original KDE Application Launcher which remains my overall best pick.

I just updated my Fedora KDE Systems on my VM and on my Laptop and the behaviour there is the same. I got this error message on all three machines when I tried to update:

Internal error:

Error when executing the transaction: file /usr/lib64/plugins/codec/libfaad_plugin.so from the installation of vlc-plugins-base-1: 3.0.21-242.x86_64 collides with the file from the package vlc-plugins-freeworld-3.0.21-4.fc42.x86_64

So i ran sudo dnf remove vlc-plugins-freeworld and the update went through. Since then I have the problem with the invisible search results.

What I noticed when I pin an app to the favourites the search results show as expected and persist a reboot.

I have same issue and it appears to be happening only when there’s no application pinned to favorite when started plasma session.
Having at least one favorite entry, even after starting up plasma session fixes the issue to me, can you check if it works to you too?
I mean this is not exactly the fix but at least we know what is the cause…
