I have been making some noise about a series of problems and frustration about missing features between Plasma 5 and Plasma 6. In one example I complained about missing entries in Display & Monitor section in P6 that were there in P5, like the compositor and color controls. All I had under “Display & Monitor” was Display Settings and nothing else.
Over the past couple of weeks of testing Wayland, I have been in the display settings page over and over and over due to removing and simplifying hardware, and testing various display drivers and due to interesting problems like “middle click to paste” causing 30% CPU usage at all times, and so on. So its not like I just missed them, I was actively looking for them.
One of the things that started to drive me crazy was the fact that it seems like the tiling engine is on, even though its turned off in the settings. I have windows resizing and snapping all over the place and its driving me nuts. So I decided to go look and make sure it was not in fact re-enabled after the update to Plasma 6. I went to Ksettigns to check the desktop effects page… and I could not find the page.
So I used the search function in Settings, looking for “effects” when up pops two entries under “Display & Monitor” as well: Compositor and Gamma. The very same entries I have complained were missing.
Surprised, I check to ensure they were real and working, and they were. I then backed out back to the main menu and checked “D&M” again, and lo… there were the previously missing entries. And Desktop Effects was back where is should have been. OK, I am not crazy. Stuff is actually missing that should be there.
Given this and some other problems where it seemed some old config entries were not being removed and refreshed after the update, I am beginning to suspect what has happened for almost all of my current problems is the fact that something is preventing configs from updating properly until such time as they are “touched”.
The problems is, I do not know what else may be missing or needs to be “touched”. However I have solved about half the problems I have complained about simply unsetting and resetting features and functions.
