User interface design is tricky, and not everyone (like me) is going to like every change. I don’t mean forcing back old themes, like Oxygen in 2025, but I think it would be great to have an option to switch between symbolic and colorful icons. I really like Plasma’s default icon set and would love to see it fully in Dolphin and the Kickoff menu. So far it’s still possible to revert this change by editing the KickoffListDelegate.qml file, but this is obviously just a temporary fix.
This is being worked on Symbolic Kickoff category icons in Plasma 6.2 have gathered some complaints (#142) · Issues · Plasma / Plasma Desktop · GitLab
FWIW we made the symbolic icons optional for Plasma 6.3; now the exact icons are once again controlled by the menu entries that you can change precisely using KMenuEdit.
I agree, reluctantly.
That would be fantastic.
I don’t. I don’t want to bow down to the UX lord, Apple, and I don’t want my desktop to look like a monochrome iPad. But only the breeze icon sets work consistently. Some years ago I cobbled together my own icon theme, but it keeps breaking. Is there a good icon theme editor that works with plasma?
[edit] changed “god” to “lord”, seems more appropriate
More broadly, phabricator.kde.org/T10413
applies. Would be nice to have a preference exposed to the user that is plasma-wide, considering that the implementation now exists.
It seems strange to have these icon debates about tiny scopes like the system tray and application menu. Is there a discussion about using colourful or symbolic everywhere? Has anyone ever proposed being able to choose between symbolic and colourful DE-wide?
I would definitely support such a proposal, but as I’m not able to work on it I feel I shouldn’t make it.
@jlittle, only adhere to that philosophy within reason. As long as you put the effort you can into crafting a good ticket, and you think it would be a significant improvement to a lot of people, the worst that could happen is it takes 5 minutes out of the triage assignee’s day.
I presume someone’s filed one for this at some point though, so I’ll keep searching.
Thanks. Glad to hear.
Why not use an Icon set that is colourful everywhere?
@Duha, I love Breeze, and I’m still waiting for its symbolic-only version: bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=475801
.
So far, I haven’t found a single icon pack that I actually like. They’re either just endless forks of macOS icons or strange, overly colorful outline designs.
