I deleted some photos in Darktable. I didn’t just remove them from the database, I physically deleted them via the Trash function. The files are no longer in the photo folders. However, no storage space has been freed up. I can’t find the files in the Trash either; it’s empty.
After searching around a bit, I was able to find them on the partition in the Trash folder. `ls -lah /mnt/data/.Trash-1000/files/` shows me all the files.
Why can’t I see them when I open the Trash?
each partition has it’s own trash so the “trash can” widget for the desktop is only for the partition where you have your user.
trash on other partitions have to be access using the file manager.
and if you use Shift+del then there is no going back, the files are gone gone.
I have no Widgets on the desktop. I talk about the trash bin button above the favorites in the left sidepanel of dolphin.
I had expected that clicking this icon/button opens either “all in” trash bin or at least the one for the current partition.
Or is there something I have to configure first? Deleting via shell is possible, I know but this is so old-school for DE. Additionally the real trash folder is hidden in dolphin, so that I have to reveal hidden files/folfers first, before I can remove the files there. This feels a little bit wrong.
Regarding shift+del, I know that’s the same as in Windows, but I have deleted the files from within Darktable. There is no shortcut for that.
the link to Trash shown in Places panel is the same as the trash can widget… it’s your user’s trash folder for the partition where the user acct is located.
the places icon is provide specifically because the trash folder is a hidden folder, but if you use the icon then you don’t need to show hidden files (at least not for the user trash).
however if you want that kind of access to trash on other partitions you would need to add your own link in places and give it a distinctive name (Win Trash, something).
as for what happens when you hit “delete” in an application, that depends entirely on the application and what settings are enabled in that application.
in gthumb (image viewer) for instance, you can set the del key to either send to trash or to permanently del the file (the default is send to trash and shift+del is needed to permanently delete the file).
i don’t know what darktable does, but you should be able to determine from the settings or by experiment what the behavior its… but regardless, unless those files are in your /home dir somewhere they will be either deleted permanently or sent to the trash folder on the partition where the files are located.
Ok, got it. Would be a nice addition to show all partitions with this single button. But now I know it’s better to look manually in all partitions. Unfortunately I have a lot of them. Found now ~3TB in the data partition. Deleting that gives a little bit more space
Many thanks
By right the default just like in Windows should to be to show everything that has been moved to trash no matter the drive in one folder. I for one have never liked KDE’s setup.
that would make more sense and the could even be listed by source in case that info is useful, but being able to restore to the original location regarless and/or empty them all at once would be handy.
i think there might be problems with remote drives, and there was even some discussion about not creating a trash folder on those drives, but lost lock on the convo.
