Updating KMyMoney from 5.2.1 to 5.2.2

I am new to KMyMoney and I need to update from version 5.2.1 to 5.2.2 for Windows 11 system. I download the 5.2.2 exe version but it doesn’t update the 5.2.1 version that I have been entering data in. How do I update my version 5.2.1 to 5.2.2 and keep my previously logged transactions? Currently I open KMymoney from my task manager bar at the bottom of my windows 11 screen.

Hello,

There is no direct update process from a version to another.
You have to uninstall the older version and then install the new one by double-clicking the .exe file.

have you uninstalled the version 5.2.1 ?

After having installed the version 5.2.2, you can open your local kmymoney file in the software and see your previously logged transactions.

If it is not clear or if you have questions, you can post screenshots of what you see, it helps us.

Thank you for your reply. I’m somewhat computer illiterate. I have a folder on my desktop for kmymoney. I open the program from my task manager bar at the bottom of my screen. When I was saving kmymoney to my desktop alot of white files cluttered my desktop so that is why I created the foler. I downloaded 5.2.2 to my desktop. If I delete kmymoney from my task manager bar and my system, I’m confused about where kmymoney 5.2.2 retrieves my previously entered information from? How do I make sure that information is saved first? I hope this makes sense. I’m just concerned about losing my data.

Great, you belong to the demanding and very interesting group of people for computer-savvy people like me/us. That is by no means meant to be offensive.

The data is basically kept in two locations: your data file (where all the financial transactions and account information is stored) and the configuration (where your settings are stored). If you copy both to a different location (something you should do anyway on a regular basis - we call this backup) you don’t have to worry too much about losing data.

The data file can be located by starting KMyMoney, then open the File menu and hovering the mouse over Open recent. This will open a submenu with the recently used files and showing their location on the disk. Use any kind of file manager to copy it to a different location, though installing KMyMoney should not remove it in the first place.

The configuration file is a bit harder to locate. I found it using the file manager (sometimes on Windows this is called explorer) and search for kmymoneyrc on the C: drive. I found mine in C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\kmymoney\kmymoneyrc. Replace <username> with your actual username.

Once you have those backups it usually is just a matter of downloading the update .exe file and run it. From my experience (and I am not a Windows user) one does not have to uninstall the old version first but can simply install the new one on top of it. But that depends on how you installed it in the first place. If that does not work, try uninstalling first like @surcouf explained above.

Once installed, simply start it as you do today.

I am sharing a screen shot from when I click file and hover my mouse over Open Recent. These files are in my KMyMoney2 file. Since they are already in a file I created on my desktop in Windows, are they safe? I don’t understand the rest of the process.

I recorded the installation process the way I do it in real time (there is a stretch where it seems that nothing is happening which is normal). This replaces a previously installed version of KMyMoney. All your data files are safe when installed this way. The URL to start with is Index of /ci-builds/office/kmymoney/5.2/windows . The number contained in that file will change over time. That is normal.

Thank you for sharing that video. When I do what you show in the video, It does download the program to my computer but when I click on the KMyMoney app it just goes through the download again. I never get to open the program. I think I’m stuck with 5.2.1 and not being able to split transactions.

You mentioned, that you are “somewhat computer illiterate”. It might make sense to find someone in your neighborhood to help you over that little hurdle to do the installation.

It is really difficult to provide help from (presumably) the other side of the globe without seeing your actual screen.

Yes, I was considering someone I know with better computer skills than myself. I just don’t want to lose the date I have already entered into 5.2.1. That’s my biggest hesitation. Thank you for your help though…it is appreciated very much.
