Is there a way to disable a web page (shortcut?) from becoming a widget?
I am having this issue using Vivaldi browser that every time I move a tab to open space on my desktop a widget is created. It’s very annoying.

What exactly do you move to the open space on the desktop?
With a (open) tab specifically, for me, it just opens a new browser window with only that tab in it (Chrome, Firefox and the just installed Vivaldi 8.0.4033.46-1 behave in exactly the same way) on Plasma 6.6.5 here.
Moving a browser bookmark or a link from inside a webpage on to the desktop I get a
without even a “widgets” option and neither of those options create a widget.
to get the drop menu i drag the URL from the security icon in the location bar or highlight the entire link and drag the text to the desktop.
the cursor icon even changes to show you are going to copy
you can also use shift+drag and ctrl+shift+drag to get different results, but i could not find a way to have it make a widget (only links and desktop files).
That looks exactly the same as in my last picture (without the "Widgets” section).
And could be a hint that there maybe really is some “hidden”/I’m not aware of setting(?)
I tried all sorts of (none shown) modifier Key combinations even when dragging out tabs but could not find a way to have it make a widget either.

Okay, not a widget(?) just the link as a desktop icon.
Could kinda (and kinda not, see the exception below) replicate that.
The key here is that only one Tab has to be open, if it is 2 (or more) the one that is dragged out is open in a new browser window instead. And that only happens with Vivaldi. Firefox ignores it if only one tab is open and Google chrome does not even let you drag it out if there is only one.
Except in my case I get asked if I want to create a link:
So either your Ctrl+Shift keys are stuck down
or someone else knows a setting to toggle that behavior.
The confusing part is that KDE is labeling it as a widget.
If you have issue seeing it in the gif, there’s a way to maximize the gif in imgur to see it. Still bad quality, though.
Maybe @skyfishgoo knows where his “Widgets Add Icon” section, that I not have, comes from as it more and more sounds like that and that thing has hopefully a setting.
you are dragging the tab rather than the link.
click on the location bar text and drag that.
I can drag the tab just fine and create a plain link (as long as there is only one tab)
so there has to be a setting for that somewhere.
But if the “drag the location bar text” workaround is good enough, so should it be.
i’m on plasma 5 so maybe that is the difference.

when i use the “Add Icon” under “Widgets” i get a plasma widget that can only be removed by using the context menu to Remove Icon… it is not movable, or selectable like a desktop icon.
when clicked on ONCE it will open the webpage in the default browser.
it is truly a widget.

and i must double click on it, to open the webpage in my default browser

when i choose “Copy Here” or “Move Here” it will download a local copy of the html contents of the webpage as a text file.
when i double click on it, it opens the webpage text like any other text document (source code).
So, my gif was not really a good example. It’s just showing the behaviour of my true action. I have a secondary monitor above my primary monitor and there are times that I need a page (tab) moved to the secondary monitor for viewing, or whatever. That page is moved just fine, however, as you can see from the gif, it leaves behind a “widget” shortcut on the desktop that I don’t want to stay there when I am done viewing the page on that secondary monitor.
I really wish there was a way to disable that action.
Would be interesting to know if other users of up to date plasma 6 have that “Widgets Icons” function or not.
As I’m on Arch it could totally be behind a (at least for Arch) additional Package that I have not installed.
On the other Hand, since regular Desktop icons got fixed (not sure at what plasma 6 version exactly anymore) it makes IMO no sense to use a widget for links on the desktop anymore. Or does it?
So, you prompted an idea for me to try out.
I have a laptop that has the same version of Fedora KDE Plasma. On the laptop I do have a context menu in which I have the option to cancel link creation. I’ve no idea why I don’t have that menu option on my desktop.
look at your settings > window behavior
and check your focus stealing prevention settings.
it may be the menu is behind your webpage window.
you should still be able to use ESC to prevent the creation of the widget, tho.
focus stealing prevention is at low.
Hitting the ESC button does the trick. Thanks! Now I just have to remember to do that everytime I drag a web tab to my secondary monitor.
… or use a different browser that doesn’t do that.
