What does the "Pin Tab" feature of Kate do?

I thought that it maybe prevents the window from being closed, or the tabs from being closed. It also doesn’t keep the tabs at the front of the tab bar, like Firefox does for example.

Why would I pin tabs, then? I’m genuinely curious!

There is absolutely no reason to assume that pinning tabs will prevent a window from closing (as you said, you used pins in Firefox - but that never stopped you closing windows, did it? Indeed, if you had two windows open and closed one, then you could also lose those pinned tabs unless you had an extension to ‘keep pinned tabs’).

So tell me, why the heck would you pin a tab in Firefox?

Firefox isn’t a great example - if you have two windows and inadvertently click ‘X’ to close Firefox, you just lose one window and any tabs (including pinned)… and that’s bad.

That’s why I got an extension (Keep pinned tabs alive). This is cool - you can start a new window, maybe a context click to search something you’re looking at. Then the new window becomes like a new session, you do your stuff and pin something valuable… then if you close that window, the pinned tabs will open in your previous Firefox window.

I’m sure you are more than capable of answering your own question.

It’s just a simple way to ‘pin’ up a document to be available whenever you use Kate. Pinned means they aren’t taken away if you open a completely new session - like a noticeboard on your wall.

Open a ‘Scratchpad’, open a ‘ToDo’, keep running notes whilst you work on a variety of other things…

Really, it’s not difficult to think of a really long list of ideas that you can use Pins for.

Think of it this way - if you have ten equally effective ways to achieve the same goal, are any of those different ways any less valid than the others?

This is part (for me) of the KDE Philosophy - to cater for all styles of user and allow them to choose how they do things.

It’s more of a free environment than a dictatorship.

I suggest reading the feature request where it was originally requested: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=486641

Thanks! I thought it was Kate’s standard behavior to re-open tabs when restarting the app - I did not connect it to the pinning.
