What happened to ‘Startup and Shutdown’ in System Settings?

I cannot find ‘Startup and Shutdown’ in my System Settings - even after searching for ‘startup’. My understanding is that it used to be under ‘Workspace’.

My system details are:

Operating System: Kubuntu 26.04 LTS
KDE Plasma Version: 6.6.4
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.24.0
Qt Version: 6.10.2
Kernel Version: 7.0.0-14-generic (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: Wayland

It would be more useful to think of the specific function you’re looking for rather than focus on an ‘umbrella’ category, because categories have been changed.

So ask, rather, for the exact thing you’re looking for… because there is no longer a ‘Startup and Shutdown’ category.

If you’re interested to find autostart entries, then typing the word ‘start’ in the search window will isolate that for you.

It used to house the Login Screen (SDDM)… which is a security feature, and thus relocated to Security & Privacy. The important thing to remember if you want to find the SDDM, or Login settings is that you type the word ‘SDDM’ or the word ‘Login’ in the search.

It used to house the Desktop Session, which is now relocated to ‘Session’ and - again, if you want this you should type the word ‘Session’ in your search.

Task Scheduler is also located there, and of course if we wish to find the Task Scheduler we would type ‘scheduler’ or ‘task’ in the search.

So rather than actually answering your slightly rhetorical question there, I’d be more inclined to ask you…

  • What do you want to do?

Many thanks for your reply ben2talk. Now I know where to look in the future.

My primary objective is to dispense with having to type the login password every time I restart or resume. I have achieved this with the startup - although this has been replaced by the KDE Wallet password request (but I understand that there is way to remove the KDE Wallet request.)

However, I am still being asked for the user password on a resume. Is this something that has to be changed elsewhere?

Ideally, I would like to use my onboard fingerprint scanner instead of passwords but it is not yet established whether my particular Dell Latitude 7490 scanner is even supported under Linux.

That is screen locking. You can adjust this as you need to there.

When you set automatic login at the login screen, it will tell you what to do for that:

In Kwallet’s section in System Settings, open the wallet manager and change the password to be blank.

Many thanks claydoh. I now have startup and resume working the way I want it to.

Unfortunately, Linux does not support my particular fingerprint scanner but that is not a problem for me.
