When I start digikam before starting the NAS where the photos are stored, digikam spends hours working before I can see albums,

I have about 120,000 photo files on HDDs in a Synology NAS. The digikam database is on an SSD, over 3 GB for the thumbnails.

If I start the NAS before starting digikam on the PC (64bits, Pro, Win 11 v21H2), I can see all the photos almost straight away. HOWEVER, occasionally I forget to start the NAS before starting digikam on the PC, in which case, as far as I can tell, digikam seems to re-check the databases (even though no photos have been changed/added/deleted) and this process takes hours.

Is there any way to prevent this happening? (other than, obviously, ensuring that the NAS is up and running before digikam starts).

Hi @BSOH,
You can try turning off scanning at startup.

Go to Settings->Miscellaneous, and uncheck “Scan for new items at startup”

Cheers,
Mike

Thanks, Mike, that sounds like it should do the trick. I’m new to digiKam but greatly enjoying it, especially the geolocation tools - another way of organising and retrieving photos.
