Hi,
I was wanting to try one of the more recent releases of KDE, but it is in .raw format. I was advised to use Iso Writer to do the conversion to .iso but none of the various Plasma distributions I have tried works (PCLOS Debian and Q4OS, both releases used based on “bookworm”). They have the iso writer available for installation but not one that is current.
I think you’re very confused… you can just install an image writer and use the raw file to create your live USB.
OK, so this is what I attempted first. I had to download the AppImage referred to if not in Discover. I tried to make a bootable USB thinking it was just a case of selecting the .raw file and then the USB. Then after searching I converted the .raw image to an .iso based on this guide:
sudo dd if=your-file.raw of=your-file.iso bs=4M status=progress
which created an .iso of the same name as the .raw image but now had the .iso.
I launched the iso image writer AppImage and selected the newly created .iso, but the empty USB (FAT32) does not show up in the field below:
Well I solved the problem. The AppImage of the KDE iso writer did not work. Ironically the only thing that did work was Gnome’s MultiWriter! So I booted into live mode of the most recent KDE release and was very disappointed. I have an nvidia GT-1030 card that is fully capable of 1920 x 1080 resolution, and as I write this I know why … Wayland!
The only way I could get a full screen with correct proportions was to reduce from 100% to 50% scaling but then all the screen images and fonts become blurry, so I wouldn’t recommend KDE OS for anyone. I am aware that kde intends to drop X11 in due course, which will make me have to change to AlmaLinux or Devuan which I have used previously.
Currently I am using PCLOS Debian Plasma (“bookworm” edition) which I prefer over the latest “trixie” version as Tiled Menu from zren does not work correctly.
