Why is Breeze-Dark getting darker over the years? And: should we reverse this trend?

Years back, I made a slightly modified version of Breeze-Dark, mostly because I thought the accent color was too bright.
Then, some months ago, there was a post here about getting the old colors back (or something like this). That was when I first noticed that the background colors really differed from what I used.

For comparison:

Personally, I feel the high contrast of the current Breeze-Dark is unpleasant to the eyes and believe it should go back to what I am using.

But back to the question: Why is Breeze-Dark getting darker over the years? Is it just to save a bit of power? Is it to follow current trends? Or are there any real studies saying it’s better for UX?

EDIT: uploading the picture made the colors brighter. Is this a bug in discuss? In any case the real picture can be found here: https://aguzinski.de/BWPubq6/20260502_101738.png

EDIT2: Ok, it seems to be the browsers doing… same effect when I open the link in vivaldi. So, for correct colors it may be necessary to download it and open it with gwenview.

The colours in Firefox match perfectly with my settings module.

I’m slightly curious as to whether the darker trend in themes, and the lack of ā€˜not bright’ light themes, is popular - I find that I always end up using my old edits.

On the left is a bearable toned down version of a Windows XP theme, on the right - Marble is nice for Office apps (something that Microsoft did well).

I blacken everything possible. Lots of nightime computing in the dark. No sunglasses required. Looks good in the daytime too.

I agree with the OP. I find the even darker version gives me headaches. I think a dark theme just needs to not burn your eyes out in a dim room; it doesn’t need to be pure black. That’s why I based Klassy Dark initially on the original Breeze Dark.

Hm.. looks like a non-representative majority is for ā€œdon’t make it too darkā€? Still hoping for someone from the Breeze design team to chime in about the reasons.

By this, do you mean you darken the foreground (e.g. fonts) too?

Yup, Firefox displays it correctly for me, too. Vivaldi does not… I suspect some weird decision by google in chromium :/.

Wow - too much to unpack here.

Switching between Klassy Dark and Breeze Dark, there’s a slightly annoying prominent titlebar (Breeze blends it in, which I prefer). Breeze is as dark as I’d like to get, but it is a fine balance that suits MY room, my HDTV and my colour preferences - so my brightness is set around the same as Breeze Dark, but the fonts are slightly toned down.

There’s no wrong/right here, but it would be nice if you could do an instant 24 hour survey across all installations of the KDE Plasma desktop…

For sure, the forum/reddit/wherever you try your survey/ is going to be a really non-representative majority.

But hey, what’s to stop anyone loading up Breeze Dark, then ā€˜save as 001 Breeze Dark’ and tweaking it to suit?

Well, I prefer the darker theme for dark but feel that the light theme is too white
