Why no "Extend" option for multiple screens?

Hi there, I’m fairly new to Plasma, and overall I really like it, but there are a few things which almost made me switch to another Desktop Environment.

One such thing is the widget that lets you switch between different monitor layouts. On every other OS/DE I’ve ever used, there’s an “Extend” option, but for some reason, Plasma chose instead to have “Extend to left” and “Extend to right”.

Out of consistency, why are there no “Extend to top” and “Extend to bottom” options? Or out of simplicity, why not just “Extend” which would remember the previously set positions instead of resetting them?

My setup happens to be a laptop placed below an external monitor, and 90% of the time I enable both monitors, in “Extend” mode. I can go to the Display settings to say that my built-in monitor is below my external monitor, and then things work great; if I had to do that only once, everything would be perfect. But with the current behaviour, if I switch to the external screen only, then move back to “Extend to [right/left]”, the relative positions of my monitors get forgotten, and I have to reconfigure them again, which is very annoying.

I’m sure there must have been a reason behind this choice, but I can’t imagine I’m the only person for whom it’s harmful. Is there a way this could be reconsidered if it gains enough traction, and in that case could it be fixed in Plasma 5? I don’t know whether the same behaviour exists in Plasma 6, but as I’m on Debian 12, my understanding is that I have to use Plasma 5 until Debian 13 is released next year.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!
