Yet again, KDEnlive being an issue

Again I’m here to try and fix random issues with kdenlive.

Today, after simply updating my system using Linux Mint’s Update manager, kdenlive just decided “meh, I don’t feel like working today”

It won’t open any video file. At all. It just throws a small, undescriptive error “Could not open file […]”.

Looked at the config wizard, it says:

  • Missing package: AVFilter
    provides many effects. Install recommended

  • Missing MLT module: avformat (FFmpeg)
    required for audio/video

I haven’t removed either, or done any changes. It was working perfectly fine yesterday.

It told me to look at the online manual. All it says is

“Avformat | Is the FFmpeg module. Make sure you have ffmpeg installed on your system.”

Useless advice.

It is installed. I uninstalled and re-installed just in case. Same issue.

I’ve kdenlive running as a flatpak, because the alternative didnt even install(through software manager) for some reason. AppImage works fine.

Argh, unfortunately Linux Mint packaging is really not recommended to use Kdenlive with because it is outdated and package versions don’t work well together sometimes. It is recommended to use the Appimage or Flatpak packages from Kdenlive’s website in such cases.

so the packaging of one of the most popular, probably top 3, distros out there isn’t good for kdenlive?

EVEN when its a flatpack?

Have you seen what the leader of one of the most popular, probably top 3, countries out there, has been doing lately?

Or how often we have had to say “It’s Not Good” here before? It’s not like you’re completely new here. I’m surprised this surprises you.

AppImage works fine.

QED.

Unfortunately, this doesn’t work as the 25.12.3 Flatpak build was botched. My apologies for that. A solution is provided here: roll back to Flatpak 25.12.2

No because it uses very old versions. For a better experience under Debian/Mint you’ll need to stick to appimages or flatpaks. The other alternative is to switch distros.

so is version 25.12.3 very old? because thats what it updated to within a month of its release.

and again it was a flatpak. I did explicitly say that twice. It was just a flatpak installed through their software manager(using flathub).

Not to mention how incredibly unstable major updates are, which I pointed out as well, even under other systems(it was equally as bad on windows 10)

Are we going to blame everyone and everything else?

same problem (flatpak on kde linux)

And we acknowledged that this time something went wrong, the 25.12.3 Flatpak was botched and caused these issues. Again, sorry for that. AFAIK, the issue is fixed now and Flatpak is working again.

Guess how to prevent that? Testing, testing, and more testing. For which we need the community because we cannot do it as thoroughly and comprehensively with the small team as the user base can. See the post(s) about the RC that is available now. Test drive the living daylights out of it and report anything that doesn’t work or is causing issue. Then we can fix it and make the next major updates much more stable.

Confirmed that the build bug is fixed now. Current flatpak works fine.

Thanks for the amazingly quick work, folks! Kdenlive continues to be a terrific project both to use and to work with.
