Started as a tv engineer apprentice in 1966. I moved to reprographics after qualifying because the pay and supplied cars were better and problems easier to solve. Progression upwards was more likely. Emigrated to Western Australia 1882 state service manager for Pioneer Electronics, then headhunted by Radio Rentals. I just swapped morons in Melbourne head office for total wallies in London so in 1986 went self-employed working out of my garage. A mate asked me to join in a new company and we had a great company installing PA systems, video walls and large screen projectors in big venues, stadia and casinos all over Australia. My partner died and I folded the company went back to college at 50 full-time for 3 years doing system administration and networking mainly on AD servers. Was introduced to Red Hat linux in 1996 at this time and graduated in 2001. The IT bubble burst in WA at this time so got a training qualification, called train the trainer in Aus. A mate asked me to help him with the fortnights training course for new taxi drivers at the Swan taxis school. Realized I needed to be a taxi driver got my licence and did a few week-end shifts. My friend had a nervous breakdown and left; the management asked me to step in run the school and help them through the next federal audit. I worked a 70 hr week and got them through it and took a holiday back here in blighty for a couple of months. When I returned I was told my services were no longer required I was too expensive. Sweet revenge, 10 months later they failed the audit with the new guy and the school closed. 2 months later it was bought by a Singaporean outfit. I then sort of did od bits and pieces, the sysadmin for a swimming pool company and also for a pet food manufacturer before another mate asked if I would join him in a new venture, importing leisure trailers from France. We built the company from scratch and in 2009 had a $2.5m turnover with 40ft containers arriving every 6 weeks or so and an employee roster of 15. We invited some new partners to join us and on died of stomach cancer at the age of 30 the other was a rouge and absconded after draining our bank accounts. I had a heart attack in 2012 and my doctor told me to give up working. My son had a bad melanoma and he wanted to return to the UK. We came back in 2014, I drove a taxi in Christchurch Dorset for a while but now fully retired.
