At Solutions Linux 2004 (Paris), i had together in front of me Gaël Duval and Joël Bernier (Linux-Kheops / Les logiciels du soleil / RedHat).
Both have confirmed me this:

« In 1998, Joël sent a Redhat 5.1 to Gaël and this is the start point of the adventure. Without this shipment, Mandrake would not be born. »
