KDE Neon fails to pass the SDDM when an external screen is connected

Hi there, first help post im writing here, but after a recent system packages update, my Neon install fails to go past the SDDM if i attempt to login while my external monitor is connected through the HDMI port
(I am using a Acer Nitro 5 Laptop)

Unplugging the device, login in and then plugging it back in works fine, but it is a bit of an annoying workaround.

Visually, the login screen dims the password entry field as it would during login, and still responds to input (including command features like CTRL ALT F1), any more idea (or information i could forward to help) would be appreciated!

The likely explanation is that Plasma just fails to start with the external screen connected, and the crash is just so fast that you don’t notice it.

You probably want to submit a bug report about this, but lets first get some more information about the situation: I’m assuming you are running the latest user version of Neon, with Plasma 6.2 on Wayland, as you’ve selected the “neon” tag and didn’t provide any other details. If this is wrong, please let us know.

Try this:

While being logged out on the SDDM screen, and with the external screen connected - note the time.
Try to log in
After it fails, wait a few seconds, then note the time again.
Disconnect the external screen and log in normally.
When the session starts, run Konsole to open a terminal window.
Type into the terminal the following command:

journalctl --user -u plasma-kwin_wayland.service -S START_TIME -U END_TIME | cat

(where you replace the text START_TIME with the time you noted before trying to log in, and replace the text END_TIME with the time you noted after failing to log in. For example: journalctl --user -u plasma-kwin_wayland.service -S 13:55:00 -U 13:56:30 (make sure there’s a at least a minute between the different times).

Copy the resulting text and paste it as a message here.

Hi, thanks for your response! My apologies for the lack of details, my message was a bit hasty, but yes, I am running the latest user version of KDE Neon

Ill take this time to also detail additional problems I forgot to mention (my mistake!)
First, the Sleep, Shutdown and Reboot options are all greyed out, they react to hover but not clicking, even before login
Second, the system will not unlock unless I force a shutdown from the power button, it’ll stay on the login screen until I close down the system, I attempted to restart the SDDM to no avail, if it booted with the screen plugged in, there is no way to log in.

As for the logs, here they are: (I had to remove the “plasma-kwin_wayland.service” and user filters, as that outputted nothing)

There are some SDDM theme errors, but they don’t look to specific to an “external screen connected” behavior - though they could be.

I initially thought that the problem was with the use session starting - but if you didn’t see any logs for the user session at that time, and the system log you provided shows no actual logging in behavior - then the problem is that SDDM, for some reason, does not actually get to logging you in when the external screen is connected.

When you start SDDM with out the external screen - do you still see the sddm-greeter-qt6 errors about Main.qml in the system log?

BTW - to restart SDDM without rebooting, you can try to hold CTRL+ALT+F4 (or other F keys) to get to a text VT, then log in with your user name and password, then run sudo systemctl restart sddm.service.

Thanks for the help for restarting the SDDM, I had tried a solution i found online but that one didnt work, and as for the errors, it still gave it on my last successful login, here are the logs for both attempts, first is with the external screen, second is without it (restarted the SDDM from the VT)

(NOTE: I took the time to remove the bluetooth endpoint registered lines as those did not contain any errors and seem to be working successfully (and unrelated), if they do happen to be needed Ill print it out again)

So there is definitely some kind of problem with the SDDM breeze theme - it has errors with the external screen connected and won’t allow you to log in.

You should open a bug report in the Breeze components on bugs.kde.org - select “general” for the component. Add your failed log and explain what happens.

You can also try to see if other SDDM themes will be less problematic, though I doubt it will work.

Can confirm that changing into a different SDDM theme did fix the issue! I am now on my way to report the bug.

Hmm, so the fallback theme does work without issue, but the reason why I got to the fallback theme is due to themes being too old to load, and the one theme that worked was forked from Breeze (either that or inherited the properties) and still causes the same issue. Ill report the bug but Im unmarking this as “solved” due to the fix being quite messy

I have the exact same issue. It took me the all morning figure out that I could log in normally from the command line…

For the record, login in directly from the command line works fine:

Press CTRL-ALT-F3 or whatever
Log in
Execute startplasma-wayland or startplasma-x11
Enjoy

By the way @Reset_Velvet , if you open a bug report in the breeze component please link it here too. I hope this gets fixed soon…

Bug is reported and some users are also reporting that logging in from the other screen can work, but it hasnt been a success for me so far. Remarking this as “solved” as the bug has been reported and temporary solutions have been found (restarting the SDDM without the second screen, trying to log in from the other screen, using a different SDDM that isnt forked from Breeze or @nake 's solution of forcing the start of X11/Wayland are all temporary solutions one can attempt to bypass the problem while we are awaiting a fix)

According to the discussion on the bug report, another workaround is to disable Qt’s incremental garbage collector. To do that:

Open a terminal (for example, by running the Konsole application)
Run sudo systemctl edit sddm.service (and type in your password at the prompt).
In the editor that opens, enter the following text - between the markers:

[Service]
Environment=QV4_GC_TIMELIMIT=0

Press CTRL+X to exit, and type “Y” to save the modification.
Restart your session and SDDM by running sudo systemctl restart sddm.service - this will knock you out of the session causing all applications to close. A safer way to restart SDDM would be to reboot.

When the problem is eventually fixed, you can remove the change by either running systemctl edit again and deleting the lines you’ve added, or running sudo rm -f '/etc/systemd/system/sddm.service.d/override.conf'
