A photo with strong colors from Gwenview

In the collection of photos that i use generally they appear the same both in the image viewer (Gwenview) and on the background/wallpaper, but there is a special photo that appears differently in Gwenview and differently in the browser or KDE desktop and wallpaper. In Gwenview i see it with a stronger colors that i quite like it, but don’t understand why this photo appears such differently?

Photo is from this link (full size).

And this is how it appears to me, I can clearly tell the color difference.

Please can someone investigate it?

You should fix that screenshot first.

I don’t know how you’d investigate that, Gwenview shows images in exactly the same way as wallpaper does except for the scaling… so it might be something to do with colour profiles or display modes.

Did you look at settings?

Screenshot it’s okay, open once you click on it, or right click to open in a new tab.

Well, i can clearly see with eyes the difference from the big picture to the small one. Also, I just saw it with my Samsung S23 Ultra there is difference, I sent the photo to someone with an iPhone 16 Pro,he confirms that he sees it differently. The small photo has stronger colors than the large photo says.

I haven’t changed any settings regarding color profiles, The monitor is of sufficient quality from the factory that i do not need to make extra modifications.

Haha you’re right - the first time it opened a thumnail size image in a new tab, not sure what happened there.

So maybe you have some automatic colour profile trickery going on there, I forget the details - but someone had issues with automatic colour profile display…

This is really strange though, I’m stumped -but I’m getting exactly the same difference in Gwenview.

Not with pqiv… so I’m curious if it’s something to do with the EXIF data… but it does have a built in sRGB colour profile (embedded) which is affecting Gwenview.

Despite seeing this information loading with GIMP, it still looks the same in GIMP.

Hmmm but it looks a lot like Gwenview applies it’s own color management on top of the system wide profile instead replacing it when drawing the images.

Out of interest, if you select ‘adjust colours’, the colours displayed are also reset.

There’s also a long thread about this from 6y ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/kde/comments/bsa6ew/help_gwenview_displaying_wrong_colors/

Bug here with no resolution: [Bug 650906] Re: gwenview does not display properly images with ProPhoto RGB color space

Here too (closer to home); 361887 – gwenview shows wrong colours

Curious now if Wayland vs X11 shows any difference too.

You can experiment and ultimately remove the disparity this way:

Load in GIMP (backup the image first) and then convert, select different options.

  • absolute colourimetric (gives the same disparity)
  • perceptual (removes the disparity).

Can’t see any dif. Gwen, Qimgv and desktop. Same.

@ben2talk wow, a lot great help and research done. My concern is that out of 200 images that i have saved only this single pic have this strange color difference, All the other pictures appear fine in gwenview and KDE wallpapers.

Indeed, adjusting colors returns the pic to its natural state.

@dzon they look the same on your post on my monitor.

Well, what can I say. They look exactly as in the link. Tried two diff resolution downloads. Zero difference.

@dzon X11 or Wayland? Please show your Gwenview version.

X11 and cretaceous gwenview.

Ok, thanks for let me know. KDE Gear/Gwenview or Display server something is here, As a Tumbleweed user, i’m a little ahead with version numbers, and the possibility of a bug is not excluded.
