I use wallpaper slideshow along with Accent Color from Wallpaper.
It’s been like this for a lot of time, but when the wallpaper changes, the whole system lags more than I think would make sense for this operation.
I’ve captured the behaviour in btop, it’s visible in CPU and GPU usage (do notice all the cores spiking up somultaneously):
I don’t know if this is expected behaviour but it does sound more like a bug to me ?
I use Arch (btw) and I’m pretty much on latest, currently I have plasmashell 6.5.5
I have confirmed that disabling accent color from wallpaper provokes no CPU usage.
Any suggestions appreciated

Well what you’re describing doesn’t sound very abnormal to be honest…
Initially, I thought I had other issues (video freezing or skipping) until I noticed it happened when wallpapers changed…
Plasma cannot really apply this quietly… in it’s initial stages, it was fairly quiet - but it didn’t update properly; it was really janky.
In it’s current state, you pay for your slick interface with a momentary hit on performance because it triggers the entire theme/colourscheme refresh through plasmashell…
So yes, sometimes there are ripple effects - interrupting video or animations sometimes.
I haven’t reported it myself, but I’m confident it is registered as a bug - something that will hopefully be smoothed out somehow as plasma changes… but right now it’s just a heavy feature, an extra ‘bloat’ that you can put up with if you want it badly enough.
I have 2 solutions…
- Set the wallpaper to change less frequently, either hourly or more… it’s not difficult to manually right click and hit ‘n’ if you’re bored with it.
- Choose a nice accent that better matches your theme. This is where I moved, having a taste for more Pink Panther, I’m into purple/pinks (Dracula themed yazi/fresh-editor etc) and Magna theme elements, and then choose an accent colour by picking an interface element, then adjusting saturation/brighness to make it clear enough without being too disruptive.
Keep it simple
