I did a normal desktop upgrade to 24.04 and it finished without any errors.
But then I run into several probems, all of which except one I could fix myself.
1.) After reboot my system would always boot into the BIOS. As it turned out, the installation messed up the UEFI boot entries and kept the old neon entry alive. The old entry was still there and was setup as boot priority 1, but it did not boot.
Changing the boot priority to the new entry KDE neon fixed the problem.
2.) I had the nvidia driver 560 installed and it seems the upgrade kept this driver alive, but did not a proper dkms rebuild with the new kernel. Thus the existing 560 driver was not compatible with the new kernel, which resulted in the driver not being loaded and in a total unusable GUI.
The fix was to install nvidia-driver-550 and after that the graphics system worked fine.
3.) I keep getting a message '‘The process for the tags protocol died unexpectedly’ everytime I open dolphin, use krunner or even try to search in the application launcher. With this I also get a crash message about a dying kiorunner.
The internet seems to relate this problem with baloo, but I tried all the tips there ( including removing .local/share/baloo). Dektop search was never activated on my system and now I even deinstalled baloo.
I still get this annoying behaviour. krunner and application launcher is unusable.
Do you have any tips on how to solve this problem.
I had the same problem in that I would also boot into the BIOS and the old neon entry is still there.
I can change the boot device and have 3 options -
neon (ADATA SX8200PNP)
UEFI OS (ADATA SX8200PNP)
KDE neon (ADATA SX8200PNP)
Booting with KDE neon works.
The BIOS has boot priority UEFI Hard Disk:neon and I just can’t work out how to either remove the old neon entry or change the order so that KDE neon is first - How do I do it please?
In my case ( I have a MSI board with MSI BIOS) I just selected the entry for neon and pressed ‘enter’, which providied me with a dialog where I could just move the ‘KDE neon’ entry to the top of the list.
I had the same issue following updating my HP laptop. In the efi/bios settings it is the entry with ‘kde neon’ in the title that should be top of the booting entries.
Similar issues, EFI had old entry, updates went through, but boot menu had old entry.
Then after a newer update, desktop did not come up - blank screen.
Downloaded the latest KDE neon (User edition) ISO and installed it, wiping the entire disk. Now even at first boot, no display.
Might get the previous version and wait for a bug fix for 24.04
In the mean time I have done a complete fresh install, wiping my root partition.
I had various further problems, like wayland not working at all.
Now with a fresh install for now it works, but it is a real pain to bring the system back to the roughly the state is was before, like mount points, all the missing installs with adding the extra repositories, changes to the docker setup.
The last 2 updates to focal and jammy did work fine for me, so this one is a bit of a bummer.
Blank Screen after Update / Card: NVIDIA GFORCE RTX Series
I could get it working again by opening a root shell via the recovery mode and removing all nvidia packages:
apt list --installed | grep ‘nvidia’
apt purge

Update: Unfortunately few days later the same situation appeared after System Updates again even at a completely fresh installed .iso. KDE Neon is not longer working properly at my case at latest Hardware. So sad it is, I had to leave it…At other devices where still KDE NEON is installed I will not update anymore…
