Hello guys,
As header says, my application launcher is completely empty after upgrading to KDE Plasma 6 neon. When I create a new user it works fine, I would rather not go that route as I have a lot of settings to customize my user over the last few years.
Steps I’ve taken to try to remedy the issue.
- Tried renaming .cache to .cache.bkp and then rebooting without success.
- .config to /config.bkp and then rebooting without success.
- then renaming both and rebooting without success.
Anyone have any ideas on what to do to try to get my applications back in to my applications launcher?
Thanks,
just tried to install a few screenshot tools so that I could showcase the issue but I cant take any screenshots either with the following error:

I don’t know if this helps anyone, but Debian just forced Plasma 6 upgrade on its “Testing” branch users. Happened during a normal routine upgrade. I had three seemingly nasty problems which were all related to the same root cause.
- Application launcher completely empty. No apps in any app launcher. Didn’t matter which one I tried. Also noted that “Edit Applications” did nothing.
- Open applications do not appear on task bar.
- Cannot take screen capture with spectacle

I solved all three issues by simply reinstalling the xdg-desktop-portal-kde
apt install --reinstall xdg-desktop-portal-kde
I hope this helps someone.
Nice find on a quick solution there!
For what it’s worth, though, I don’t think there’s meant to be such as thing as a “routine upgrade” when you’re on the testing branch
Fair point! lol
- though in fairness it’s actually been pretty good lately. I moved from KDE Neon to Debian Testing (Trixie) c/w Plasma when I replaced the SSD in my personal laptop just as Deb 12 (Bookworm) became stable in June 2023. Of course one needs to be careful what you “autoremove” with “Testing” and it’s certainly not something I’d install for normal users. But personally I have found it quite an enjoyable experience, overall. To my surprise, thus far it’s proven somewhat less problematic than Neon, TBH - none of those mystery dependency issues.
