Ark - Behaviour when creating a new Archive

When a new Archive is created within Ark with <Ctrl+N> or via the Button or from the Archive Menu, the new Archive File is first created if and when at least one file is inserted into the newly created Archive.

If the user only creates a new Archive and, chooses not to populate that Archive, then there’s only a placeholder in the Ark recent files list but, no placeholder file in the user’s directory.

Following a discussion in the openSUSE Forums, we’ve discovered that, some users are totally confused by this application behaviour.

Would it be possible to drop an empty file with the chosen Archive name into the user’s directory?

Yes, yes, I know that it makes no sense to attempt to compress nothing but, at least dropping an empty file into the user’s directory would help to pacify the confused users.

Nothing happens when you do nothing is the result to be expected. Anything else then you will get the whining why the hell is it creating empty files with nothing in them. Same as any other program where you cancel the initial action having done nothing a file does not get created in them, what is so special about ark users they think they need this useless behavior adopted by them only.

it is certainly possible for an empty ark archive to exist.

i can see no reason why it must have a file in it to be created… if my workflow were to set up an archive with a specific name and leave it empty i would have to add something to it, created the archive, and then delete the contents.

seems like a pointless exercise.

so i’m on board with ark going ahead and creating the archive BEFORE it is populated.
