This maybe a bit early to announce this as I’m still in early development, but I’ve decided to write an extension for Bitwarden for Falkon.
First: Who am I? My names’ Mike Young. I’m Canadian. I’ve been using Linux since 1996 and KDE since … the beginning. I’ve mostly written software for work and have been wanting to start building things for the community for a while so I thought I would start with this.
Second: Why am I making this? I love Falkon. It’s light and fast enough that I use it for almost everything. The only issue is that I don’t want to store my credentials in multiple locations and across multiple devices so I use Bitwarden to do it (a desktop, 2 laptops and my phone). I was growing a bit frustrated by having to open the Bitwarden app each time I needed to log into something so i checked to see if there was an extension for BW and I didn’t see any so I started working on it.
Third: What is the state of current development?: Right now its early alpha but I’m making headway. Using the BW CLI i’ve been able to poll the vault for passwords and have them autofill into various websites. It’s not perfect yet but it works. I also have an icon that is set up that should switch to three states: 1) Unavailable ( an instance where the user does not have the bw cli installed) 2)Locked (the user’s value it locked) and 3) Unlocked (the user’s vault is unlocked). So for I’ve got that working for 2 and 3. Also, if there is an instance where a user has more then a single entry for a website, it will return those entries and allow the user to select the proper one. So, allllll that said, I’m still a far ways off from releasing a beta. I still need to work on the UID, handing logging into and out of the vault, locking and unlocking the vault etc etc. Ultimately its my goal to mirror as closely as possible the feel of the extensions available in the other browsers.
Forth: When will it be released?: When it’s ready? I’m not 100 percent sure. I’m hoping though in the next few weeks. Once it is ready, I’ll put it up in github and store.kde.org and put an announcement up here.
Ultimately I’m building this for my own use but I’m hoping that someone else finds it useful as well.
Not 100% sure yet on that. Right now I’m doing what the bw serve states by setting the key to BW_SESSION. The bad thing is that is as we both know something readable and so, insecure. So, TBD!
I wanted to just keep anyone who’s interested in this appraised of the progress.
So I’ve got some functionality established. I’ve got the code populating data based on the website, and a popup window so an end user can select the user name and password (and if a user has more then a single entry for a site select the appropriate one they would like to use) which are then autofilled. I do have some bugs I’m working though in relation to that I’m hoping to put to bed today and tomorrow. Once I’ve got that all worked out I’ll be moving on to handling the other aspects (Logging into BW via the extension, listing contents of the vault etc etc). Its slow going but progress is being made.
Continue to make progress. It’s taken me a bit longer than expected and I’m still dealing with a log in page where I’m not getting it to work (out of 13 i’ve tried) but I’ve decided to post a screenshot of the login screen.
It’s been a few days since I last posted about this. Work is coming along well. Autofill works great and I have it working on any site i’ve tested. Just working on finalizing the look and feel of the vault now.
Looks awesome, the only weird thing is that “+new” button of the vault, it’s too rounded compared to the “unlock” and “log out” buttons on the login screen which feel more consistent with breeze theme of plasma.
Yeah right now I’m playing. With the look and feel. I may turn around and change the shape of it as I continue. Right now it’s battling typing all of the settings.
I’m super interested in this. Probably not yet, but when you’re thinking abou features, having support for self-hosted vaultwarden instances would be really useful (it might be you’ll just inherit this functionality from the cli tool - I don’t know).
That’s an interesting idea for sure. I don’t think CLI will support it, but I do plan to eventually replace CLI with something more internal. If and when that happens, I could definitely look at creating a locally hosted vault.
