Bluetooth stopped working after latest updates

I installed the latest updates this morning and restarted my machine. Apparently, one of the updates was for bluedevil. Now, I no longer see any bluetooth devices. The bluetooth icon is grey and nothing happens when I go to System Settings and click the Enable button in bluetooth settings.

I see the following with bluetoothctl:

$ sudo bluetoothctl show
No default controller available

I checked if something is blocking it, but doesn’t seem to be the case:

$ rfkill list all
0: hci0: Bluetooth
        Soft blocked: no
        Hard blocked: no
1: phy0: Wireless LAN
        Soft blocked: yes
        Hard blocked: no

What’s going on? How can I fix it?

Hey,

I’ve had some bluetooth issues as well with my desktop. I thought it might be Neon related but i turned out it’s a headware glitch and from time to time I need to do a hard powercycle to have my bluetooth respond.

For my pc, I disconnect the power from the back of the system and wait about 20 seconds. I then hold in the powerbutton for 30 seconds, plug it back in and boot the machine and my bluetooth responds again.

That said, I’m uncertain this is causing the issue but it might be worth trying at least.

If your system is a laptop, if you can you might want to disconnect the power adapter and then the battery and hold the power button for 30 seconds before replacing the battery and adapter.

Good luck!

Thanks, it’s a desktop so I just powercycled it a couple of times without success. This machine was rebooted (both soft reboot and hard reboot) multiple times since the issue cropped up so I am convinced that it is reproducible.

Hey no prob. I know with me, if i were to shut the system down and restart the issue would persist unless I did what i described above. I have an asus tuf gaming motherboard and from my understanding it’s a hardware issue and people running different operating systems have had to do this in the past.

@happycthulhu – I take it back. Your solution works! Thank you so much.

One mistake I did was not to unplug it entirely. I just turned the machine off, walked away for several minutes and turned it back on when I should have physically unplugged the power cord. After doing it correctly as you have described, bluetooth started to work again.
